Beards mustard- yellow, more tangerine in the throat. An excellent grower with strong show stems carrying 10 buds. Nice ruffled, wide and overlapping form adds to the show. Gives a very clean and sharp look to the garden.

It is all about color! No other orange amoena comes close to its color saturation. White standards are blushed pink. Rich, dark burnt orange falls are set further ablaze with vivid orange red beards. Tall stalks have average branching with 5-6 buds. Universally admired by garden visitors, all who would love to have taken a piece home.

Pronounced sweet fragrance It is all about color for this little guy. Sweet fragrance. Standards are a rich shade of salmon pink extending out to become veining as it moves towards the icy blue border. Style arms peek through with the same rich salmon coloration. Falls are white with light salmon hafts and a blue blended band becoming deeper toward the edge. The form is wide and overlapping at the hafts with good ruffles. Easy growth and strong stems make this a real garden standout. A favorite of mine and of visitors to the garden. A very pretty combination.

PUERTO VALLARTA (T. Johnson ’21)

Puerto Vallarta the iris kind of reminds me of the beautiful sunsets over the ocean on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, thus the name. Brilliant golden yellow standards. Falls have dark yellow hafts that blend to a lighter lemon wash and finally deepening to a mustard yellow edge. Salmon shadings are deeper at the haft becoming a blended wash inside the yellow edge. There is also a large white patch below the intensely saturated yellow/orange beards. A very consistent garden performer with show stems and 9 buds. An easy and strong grower that really adds a bright spot of color in the garden. Super!!

Light sweet fragrance. Milky white standards are flushed light lemon in the center and at the petal edges. Falls are a rich lavender violet overlaid with a deep red violet spot that blends out to a light flesh pink edge. I have a bit of a soft spot for this sort of pattern and the application of the color is so good on Propensity. It doesn’t hurt that it has beautiful wide ruffled form on nice stems either. Sdlg. Medium plum Standards and edge on lavender-violet falls. Deep purple thumbprint hafts surround the lavender tipped yellow beards. Large stately well-formed flowers make quite a show on stems carrying up to 9 buds.

Pink Standards with slight gilt edge. Falls are deep lavender purple with a light lavender edge and then encircled with a purple wire rim. Beards are a strange deep lavender with frosted hair tips. Gorgeous show stems with tons of buds ensure a long bloom season. Used heavily in hybridizing.

Sweet fragrance. Sky blue standards over deep marine blue falls. Beards are tangerine in the throat and frosted blue at the end. Private Lesson is a late variety with exemplary traits. Classic globular form with nice looping ruffles, tall strong stems with good branching and high bud count. Very stately in the garden and one that will not go unnoticed.

Slight musky fragrance This later blooming pink ground plicata avoids the winter damage that plagued so many earlier ones of this type. Ruffled standards are mid pink blending to mid apricot edges. Mid coral styles echo these warmer colors. Light pink falls have white luminata type patches lined mid plum. Narrow ruffled red-plum plicata bands encircle the expansive falls. Sweet fragrance. This taller sibling of ‘Make Up Your Mind’ is a very handsome traditional plicata in a lovely cornflower blue shade. It adds one more branch and a complement of 9-10 buds on show stalks. It too is a strong clean grower. Standards are a near solid cornflower blue with a buff wire edge. Slight fragrance. If you have ever wondered what that iris is on the homepage of the website, well here it is. Pretty Rich likely will never win on the show bench, as the stems are a bit high branched and tighter budded. However, the flowers open sequentially, clumps have a long season of bloom, and the color is to die for. Very strong growth and beautiful healthy foliage add to its garden value. Sdlg. Pronounced musky fragrance There seems to be no end to the variability of the ‘Action Packed’ type veined standards and falls. Standards have chalky light red-brown centers washed to mid red-brown and darker to cream band stitched and sanded light red-brown. Falls have narrow white patches sandwiched between light yellow hafts and mustard beards and decorated with dark red-brown veins and mottling. The cream ground of the lower fall disappears in a heavy overlay of red-black veins. Light yellow dotted rims and stitched reverse encircle them. Three well-spaced branches and spur have 7-8 buds. Light fragrance. Creamy white standards have light orange centers with light lavender veins, becoming orange as they extend outwards to the petal’s edge. Falls are a medium orange with salmon tones blended in the center. We continue to work on the orange amoena type to improve the stems.
