Two things immediately come to mind when I think of this flower: the brilliant beard and the wonderful wide, round and ruffled form. It could be described as a rimmed broken color plicata. A very interesting mix of several patterns in one. I have used it heavily in breeding. Zig Zag is one of many iris to be introduced out of the fantastic parent Alaia.

Pronounced sweet fragrance Some seedlings are destined for introduction from the moment they open. This is one. It remains a favorite. White standards have light yellow centers changing to veining moving outward. Mid yellow styles echo the standards. Upper two-thirds of white falls are covered with heavy closely spaced dark red-brown veins and mottling. A white stripe bisects them. Neat half and half beards are mid gold ending in white. Pronounced sweet fragrance. This pretty little plicata continues with the contrasting-colored styles of ‘It’s a Small World’. Upright light buff standards showcase yummy mid peach styles. Buff falls are lightly washed pink and trimmed with elongated brown to plum plicata hafts. Big fully saturated screaming orange beards clamor for attention.

No fragrance. It has been impossible to accurately capture the vivid bright colors in a picture. Take my word for it, you won’t miss seeing this blazing blending of pink, apricot, rust, copper and gold colors topped with tangerine beards. It is gaudy to say the least.

It is amazing to have three prime selections from the same cross. This luminata plicata has old gold standards washed darker brass overall and interesting green midribs. Mid gold styles lead to bold yellow luminata type fall spots that have light tan plicata markings becoming mid cinnamon toward edges. The lower half of fall is dark mahogany with a gilt gold rim. The big burnt orange beards will make you go ‘Wow Gee Whiz’. Great from a distance or up close. Strong growth.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Wait for the punchline. There it is, the big searing orange beards. Pale yellow standards surround mid yellow styles. Light yellow falls have shaded darker yellow spots with darker widely spaced light brown veins and narrow tan-yellow band around them. Very pretty and unique.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Precise even ruffling make ‘Wide Eyed’ a worthy candidate for your garden. The large bold dark plum purple spots on falls of mid violet blue blooms make it more so. Large gold beards are a perfect warm touch. Clumps filled with stalks are a delight.

Can a turtle really tango? Centers of light blue standards are blushed pale green. Mid olive gold falls have cream rays over hafts and white streak from beard to outer edge. Using this to get clear blue standards and clear yellow or pink falls. It might take some generations.

Named after our little dog, Tula is a beauty that was labeled for introduction since its maiden bloom. Standards are an off white with light violet plicata dots and lemon flush throughout. Falls are interesting with white ground overlaid almost completely with deeper violet plicata dots. Adding to the interest are deep violet veins that extend from around the beard to petal edge. All of this is highlighted by very shocking medium lemon style arms that are very visible, creating a strong contrast. Three buds, good growth and bloom habits make this a garden favorite and a fun parent.
