Sweet fragrance. Coming from a cross made for different amoena plicatas comes this vibrant striking fancy plicata. The standards have a base color of white, heavily overlaid and veined light violet. The falls are basically lemon yellow heavily overlaid and veined violet, deepening towards purple on the lower part of the falls. Beards are orange-gold over white. Prolific grower and flowerer. Some show stems. Makes a spectacular garden show. Fertile.

Smoky orchid-pink Standards; Falls have cream ground showing through in center with a dark red-violet plicata band, haft and center stripe. Striking burnt orange beards create a dramatic effect. Nice stems with 9 buds! Much admired by visitors at the 2015 national convention! Pretty!

Light lavender to white standards. Falls are very light yellow with large rust red signal patch around yellow beard. Showy yellow style crests complete the picture. Very showy!

POSITIVE THINKING (T. Johnson ’23)

Light sweet fragrance. It is hard not to think positive when viewing this happy, cheerful iris. Standards are a brilliant canary yellow. Falls are creamy white with a canary yellow haft and band. There is also a touch of lilac on the shoulders and blushed below the beard. An interesting and beautiful application of color. Nicely ruffled, well-branched show stems are the norm. Sdlg. PORTLAND PINK (P. Black ‘15)

It was tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Saying it is unique is a vast understatement. It is the best formed of all the pink SDBs. Color has great depth and richness. Its one flaw is some flowers have a 4th standard. It is a big advancement in my project to create SDBs that bloom into TB season. It begins bloom in early TB season. How cool to have a SDB for a TB timed show. The cross that created it, an IB X IB, shouldn’t have been fertile but it did have viable seed. Even more amazing, ‘Portland Pink’ is fertile. It can be picky about its partner but can have anywhere from a few to normal numbers of seed and they germinate. Shorty, the pod parent, is from a pink tetraploid MTB seedling X my SDB, ‘Juicy Tidbit’. The pollen parent is a multi-branched & budded IB from a small flowered TB, ‘Inspired’ sib X my SDB, ‘Love Spell’. Growth is strong and increase rapid. Although it is from 2 IBs, it has never exceeded SDB height. What about using it in hybridizing? Go on, have your way with it. It is fertile with SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. I haven’t tried MDBs. Expect wide variation in flower and plant size of seedlings.

Slight sweet fragrance. Its not the least bit pushy or brash. Subtle beauty is its allure. Pastel pink standards blend paler to delicate white edges. White fall centers blend to light pink then lighten toward edges and have darker pink texture veins. White beards whisper to get your attention; no need to shout. Three evenly spaced branches produce 7-8 buds. ‘Politely Pink’ was a charmer from the minute it first opened as a seedling.

Here’s another BB that earns the label of perfection in addition to being a possible route to turquoise TBs. Milkglass blooms are tinted and washed pale blue with style crests tinted turquoise. Show stalks have 3 branches plus spur and 9-12 buds. Impeccable clumps filled with bloom.

A delicious ruffled creamy pastel. The standards are creamy white, flushed lavender and shading to lemon at the midribs. Falls are white with 1/4” blended edge of creamy lemon. Beards are crisp soft lemon over white. Exceptional form and display in a clump. Super show Iris and should be an exceptional parent.

Listen to the changes in rhythm, voice, timbre and harmony of a great symphony and then add a little plic magic to it. The range of colors and markings of ‘Plic Symphony’ is quite appealing. Centers of white standards have random mid violet dotting and midribs transitioning to wide mid plum plic bands. Centers of dark yellow falls are dotted dark red-brown becoming heavier toward dark wine plic bands. Marigold beards are surrounded by a white patch lined and sanded dark brown. Showy clumps of stalks with 3 branches and 8-10 buds.

Musky fragrance. Light pink standards with a lilac line up the midrib. Falls have a pink ground with a deep purple dotted edge and center line extending below the beard. It is a medley of little rippled ruffles and soft pastel colors. Light pink standards are narrowly edged gold. Elongated copper peach hafts blend to pink and are edged gold. Tangerine pink beards sing with clarity. Exceptional parent.
