Light sweet fragrance. Light lemon standards have dark lemon centers extending to deep lemon veining to petal edge. Falls are a rich dark maroon with a slightly lighter area around the beard and then a light cherry rose band surrounds the petal. Nicely ruffled and branched with good clean color contrast. Sdlg. Some iris just remind me of food, perhaps it is just my insatiable appetite talking, but this one reminds me of some sort of yummy mango flavored dessert. Say the Word has very ruffled mango to peach blended standards and edge on white falls with a deep mango wash on the hafts and below the beard. A good grower and bloomer, Say the Word is a stunner; especially in full sun the color really shines. Very unique and won’t be confused with another. Gorgeous!!

Slight sweet fragrance. Clean brilliant mustard gold standards. Falls are cream with a light yellow touched wash. The falls are banded Deep oxblood red that is deeper and solid at the hafts and a showy oxblood center belly stripe that extends from the sienna beard to distal end. Excellent stems that are strong and with 9 buds will win on the show bench. Intensely dramatic in person. A wow iris for sure.

No fragrance This bold devil is all about motion and intensity. Let the dance begin. Highly ruffled vivid mid yellow standards swirl around same-colored styles with crests streaked rust. Edges of velvety red-black falls are trimmed mid red and yellow. White veins thrust over the hafts in a moustache pattern. Clumps are ooh la la hot! Sweet fragrance. Standards are lavender with pink veining and infusions in the center. Contrasting medium salmon pink style arms are quite noticeable. Sweet fragrance. One of our favorite intros for this year and that is saying a lot with its competition and the fact that it is a plicata. The color on this is hard to convey in a picture as the presence it has in the garden. It is simply spectacular in clump with its extremely bright color and sharp pattern. Standards are icy white with a near solid overlay of blue lilac. The falls are white with a blue haft, center dart below beard, and band. Even the beard is tipped in blue. Gorgeous, wide, and ruffled form make it irresistible. Running In Circles has also been admired by garden visitors. Recommended! you won’t be sorry! Sdlg. No fragrance. Peach and cream blended standards. White falls with a wide red violet plicata band and thin belly stripe that extends from below the beard to distal end. Nice classic rounded form shows off the deeply contrasting dark mustard yellow style arms, creating quite a dramatic look. Strong growth and show stems with loads of buds allows for a very long season of bloom. A very good and showy garden iris.

This was tagged for introduction from the beginning and it didn’t disappoint over its trial period. Heavily ruffled and laced standards have dark red violet bases blending paler over centers to wide oyster bands. Oyster falls are washed palest red violet and blending darker to silver white rims and veined darker over centers.

Sweet fragrance. Very light blue standards. Falls are white with a deep lilac blue band and short white violet lines on either side of the beard. Road Not Taken is a bit different color than the usual being more of a blue plicata rather than purple. The ruffed edge is also a bit different in the it is very tight and deep creating a beautiful garden effect. Sdlg. TL46C: Catch Phrase sib.

RISE LIKE A PHOENIX (P. Black ‘17)

From the ashes rises this magnificent creation clothed in dramatic plumage. It instantly demands respect and attention when it appears. Vivid gold standards base is lined and rimmed mid auburn and repeated around upper 1/3 with wider margin banding. White veins surround dark marigold beards on red black falls. Ample rufflling gives this Phoenix an extra lift. Strong show stalks have 3 branches and 10-11 buds. A strong sweet perfume is a bonus.

Sweet fragrance. Striking and colorful variegata. Standards are blended honey tan and falls are rich smooth burgundy black. Beards black tan tipped tangerine orange. Interesting parent and should give some great seedlings. We made a cross in the Sutton Garden when it was in California; it is a major part of the pollen parent.

REFINED ELEGANCE (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. The first thing that comes to mind about Refined Elegance is form! It was stunning in the fields this past spring. Lemon yellow standards are shot lilac up the midrib. Falls are a rosy lilac being deeper at the haft and lighter at the edge. A heavy wash of lemon on either side of the beard helps to accentuate the ruffles. This is a beautiful iris in a different sort of color pattern than we have seen. Sdlg. TK131WW: Head Of the Class sib.
