It is amazing to have three prime selections from the same cross. This luminata plicata has old gold standards washed darker brass overall and interesting green midribs. Mid gold styles lead to bold yellow luminata type fall spots that have light tan plicata markings becoming mid cinnamon toward edges. The lower half of fall is dark mahogany with a gilt gold rim. The big burnt orange beards will make you go ‘Wow Gee Whiz’. Great from a distance or up close. Strong growth.

WOVEN TAPESTRY (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Standards are the faintest of oyster blue with violet and pink washed centers. Falls are rich mauve, with a deep reddish purple washed central fall spot. Beards are burnt orange. Sweet perfume. Old gold standards with a light yellow edge. Falls are a rich deep mauve with a gold band. Tall large and stately come to mind with this one. It is a very fast clumper and very floriferous, covering itself in bloom. A very good iris. Sdlg. TK3YY: Suave and Sophisticated sib.

Sweet fragrance. Light yellow standards sit atop clean orchid blue falls. There is a lighter orchid wash area below the yellow-orange beard. Great stems with nice branching and bud count. The form is wide and expansive with nice ruffles. The photo shows what the flower looks like after it has been fully open for a day. The color starts out darker and transforms to the photo color. A very clean and pretty bicolor.

The complex heritage of ‘Portland Pink’ made this advancement in MTBs possible. Its form is compact and lightly ruffled. The clarity of subtle gradations of pink is stunning. Light baby ribbon pink standards encase warmer pink styles. Light warm salmon pink falls are adorned with heavily saturated mid coral pink beards. Definitely a top pick for those who love pink irises. Two branches and terminal normally have 6-7 buds.

WITCHES STITCHES (P. Black '25)

Glinda the Good Witch put her magic to work and created this enchanted plicata that has only a stitched band around the falls. Usually there is another color, sanding, or plicata marks. Standards are white with light violet-blue stitched plicata bands, but with lighter violet-blue shading in between. Falls are white with wide dark violet stitched plicata bands. Widely spaced greenish texture veins traverse the center. Stalks have three branches and 9-11 buds.

Slight sweet fragrance. Reddish brown standards blended with some yellow at the edges. Falls are lemon yellow with a deep maroon red haft and wide band. Pronounced sweet fragrance. Wait for the punchline. There it is, the big searing orange beards. Pale yellow standards surround mid yellow styles. Light yellow falls have shaded darker yellow spots with darker widely spaced light brown veins and narrow tan-yellow band around them. Very pretty and unique.

‘Winter’s Smile’ is big and broad and smiling from ear to ear. Here’s another selection from the “beauty” cross. Plush warm white flowers have big looping ruffles. Standards have a greenish blush up midribs. Strongly flared falls are blushed palest gold over hafts. Warm white beards touched pale tan don’t detract from the classic sculp- tured form. Robust clean growth produces clumps filled with show stalks having 3 branches and 9-10 buds.

What a beauty she is as she takes flight. Standards of heavily ruffled blooms are shaded light pink and are edged with ivory lace. Wide falls are light buff peach with darker veins and ivory laced edges. Burnt orange beards are an interesting contrast. Strong show stalks have 3 branches and 7-8 buds.

‘Wild Streak’ is notable for its color saturation. Buff peach standards have rather large random irregular mid lilac segments. Pale peach falls with darker peach hafts and edges have dark to mid grape irregular splashes, streaks and solid segments. Strong, vigorous growth produces stalks with 3 branches and 7-8 buds.
