Bright yellow Standards. Falls have a large cinnamon central spot surrounded by a wide white border and then a gold band. A very unique creation and proving to be a great parent for unique patterns. Different!!

MAKING A SCENE (T. Johnson ’20)

Icy white standards with green veining up the midrib. Falls are white with gold veined hafts and gold and purple blended veins on either side of the beard. Then there is almost a complete white bar across the falls which transitions into purple lines and wash and finally a light lemon edge. A very complex color pattern indeed. Even the beard is different. The hairs are white at the base then orange and finally red at the tips. Nice branching and strong growth and 8 buds. A favorite seedling of mine for the last few years. Very distinctive and won’t be confused with anything else.

White ground standards are almost completely sanded and dotted gold, lighter in the center. Falls are white with deep red violet hafts and rim at distal end of petal. The border on the sides of the fall is heavily dotted medium lavender. Yellow beards with light lavender tips add to the interest. This is a very interesting and different color combination for a plicata. Very lovely and cheery. A good strong grower with nice stems and buds and classic form. Fantastic! Sadly, for hybridizers the cross tag had faded and I could not read it, so it is unknown parentage.

Sweetly scented. A very unusual color pattern. I have found that it is a love it or hate it Iris with visitors. I love it but it is a bit gaudy for some. Clear butter yellow Standards sit atop yellow falls with a heavy maroon wash in a bit of a segmented broken color pattern. Very unique and different.

TROPICAL BREEZE (T. Johnson ’20)

Standards are flesh pink with peach edges. Falls are flushed slightly lighter flesh pink with a wide blended peach band. Beards are kind of a strange mango peach. A very different and very pretty color combination.

QUIGLEY (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Slight fragrance. I found it quite difficult to capture the unique beauty of Quigley in a photograph. I am still not completely satisfied. The color is more vibrant than the photo shows. It is one of those that I kept coming back to admire and study its unique coloration. Really fun in full clump, sorry I missed getting a good clump shot, but there is so much happening at once in the spring and such little time. Brassy gold standards with a little white ground showing in the centers. Falls have a white ground below the beard then cinnamon dotting and a central belly stripe. A brassy gold band encircles the fall. Very different and unique.

Sweet fragrance. Medium coral pink self with salmon pink styles. The beards totally make this one and are a very different mix of colors; I am just going to say look at the picture. Amazing garden impact.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Slight fragrance. Rich butter yellow standards. Falls have a light creamy yellow base that is a near solid patch in center becoming a lined and rayed pattern that is overlaid mid to deep violet, then the petals are etched light yellow with a purple wire rim. Nicely ruffled and pleated flowers are extremely bright and showy. Quite a unique application of color and pattern. Lovely show stems and good bud count assure it to be a contender on the show bench. A favorite since its maiden bloom.

JUST CURIOUS (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Medium orange standards with darker centers and style arms. Falls are a light butter yellow with an old rose band and lighter white area below the brilliant orange beard. Super grower with well branched and budded show stems. I have used Just Curious heavily in hybridizing, it is a fantastic parent for all sorts of different rimmed patterns. It also transmits its vigorous plant habit and great stems quite easily to its children. There will be many introductions from it in the next few years. Beautiful!!

WITCH WAY (T. Johnson ’23)

Slight sweet fragrance. Reddish brown standards blended with some yellow at the edges. Falls are lemon yellow with a deep maroon red haft and wide band. Gorgeous form, with nice stalks and heavy bloom. There are several sisters from this cross that will be introduced all in different colors. Sdlg. TM187E: Superstitious sib.

FIELDS OF GOLD (T. Johnson ’23)

Light sweet fragrance. Standards are a deep lemon yellow with the edges being a light lemon. Falls are an interesting blend of lemon and maroon in the center giving somewhat of a brown effect. The petal edge of the fall is encircled in a wide cream and lemon blended band. The color of the fall can be quite different depending on the weather and the year. This last spring we were cool and wet the whole time and the flowers opened up a rich brown in the fall and then transitioned to the lighter color. Light sweet fragrance. Pink Standards and hafts over medium lavender falls. Huge blocky flowers with excellent form are carried on show stems. Check out the differing shots of it on the website. The color can be quite different with lighting, different days or even different years. Generally, the more overcast and cooler that it is the darker the color. REFINED ELEGANCE (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. The first thing that comes to mind about Refined Elegance is form! It was stunning in the fields this past spring. Lemon yellow standards are shot lilac up the midrib. Falls are a rosy lilac being deeper at the haft and lighter at the edge. A heavy wash of lemon on either side of the beard helps to accentuate the ruffles. This is a beautiful iris in a different sort of color pattern than we have seen. Sdlg. TK131WW: Head Of the Class sib.

ROAD NOT TAKEN (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Very light blue standards. Falls are white with a deep lilac blue band and short white violet lines on either side of the beard. Road Not Taken is a bit different color than the usual being more of a blue plicata rather than purple. The ruffed edge is also a bit different in the it is very tight and deep creating a beautiful garden effect. Sdlg. TL46C: Catch Phrase sib.

STAY IN LINE (T. Johnson ’23)

Light fragrance. White standards have a heavy peach pink washed center. Falls are Light orange with violet lines radiating out from below the beard. There is a wide orange band at the petal edge and within the band in the center is a large concentration of violet dots. Finally, we are starting to combine the dots and speckles pattern in a more controlled fashion instead of just random. It is also exciting to get some different colors going in the lined pattern. THIS IS CRAZY (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Deep lemon-yellow standards with a lighter edge. Falls are a rust to burgundy with a white rayed pattern extending out from around the beard. The falls are then banded with a wide lemon border and then etched by a thin red line. This Is Crazy is breathtakingly beautiful in clump. I had to keep going back to admire it every time I was anywhere close. Highly recommended! Sdlg. TK170B: Dare To Be Different and Under Pressure sib.

UNDER PRESSURE (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Under Pressure is another iris that was labeled as an intro from maiden bloom. It never ceases to perform and has good stems and buds as well. Bright yellow standards. The falls are a bit complicated. There is a yellow sunburst in the center that is bordered with a diffused wash of red violet. Then the violet transitions to lavender and finally a very light yellow rim with a violet wire edge. Sdlg. TK170C: Dare To Be Different and This Is Crazy sib.

FEUDING FIDDLES (T. Johnson ’24)

Sweet fragrance. This cross produced a very nice group of plicata patterned seedlings in several different colors and shades. Feuding Fiddles has near solid raspberry standards and band on creamy yellow falls. As with all of the sisters in the cross the form is lovely and clumps cover themselves in bloom. Sdlg.
