Here’s another in the expanding line of late blooming, multiple budded and branched SDBs. Classically formed flowers have smoky light violet to buff pink blended standards and light pink to violet styles. Mid violet blend falls have cream hafts with dark plum veins that extend downward. Dark orange beards make it even more outrageous. Three well-spaced branches have 7-9 buds.

Milk glass white standards with heavy pink flush in the center. Falls are Medium violet with deep red violet hafts and central area below beard. Nice stems carrying 8 to 9 buds. A very dramatic look.

If you need a bold spalsh of color in your garden, ‘Painted Love’ is the iris for you. Mid gold standards are blushed red violet. Wide blue violet falls have Indian red bands and hafts and are paler around deep marigold beards. Nine buds on well branched stalks add to its appeal. Reminds us of an updated version of the old classic ‘Syncopation’.

Cream and light lemon blended standards with violet flush in center. Falls Have a large deep purple-violet center spot with a very wide lavender edge. Nicely ruffled flowers are real show stoppers. One that has been much admired since its maiden bloom.

Sweet fragrance. Paloma Blanca is Spanish for white dove. Icy blue white standards and faint blended edge on white falls. Nice red orange beards are tipped blue white. Beautiful form with good lacing on the petal edges. Super clean grower with strong show stems carrying 8 buds. A very classy iris to close the season.

'Paper Tiger’ is a darker, richer version of ‘Fairy King’. Mid gold washed standards are lined and banded dark gold. Darkest red plum falls bend to purple and then to black centers, all underlaid with darker veins. Clumps are filled with show stalks.

Icy lavender blue standards have a salmon-peach central flush. Falls are a smooth and rich violet purple with a lighter lavender edge. Great stems, growth, buds, form and very floriferous making quite a statement. We like everything about this iris.

Extremely wide and ruffled rosy purple plicata on white ground. There is deeper purple plicata marks across the hafts on either side of the beard. The beard is light lavender with deep lavender hair tips. NOT just another purple plicata!

A super clean and sharp pattern really makes PHOTO SHOOT stand out with its pristine white ground and precise blue to violet dotting around both the standards and falls. A dark violet black bar across the hafts and deep purple style arms add to the drama. Even the beards add a bit of mystery being yellow in the throat then becoming lighter with violet tips. Super nice ruffled form completes the package. Not just another purple plicata!

Here’s another BB that earns the label of perfection in addition to being a possible route to turquoise TBs. Milkglass blooms are tinted and washed pale blue with style crests tinted turquoise. Show stalks have 3 branches plus spur and 9-12 buds. Impeccable clumps filled with bloom.

PORTLAND PINK (P. Black ‘15)

It was tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Saying it is unique is a vast understatement. It is the best formed of all the pink SDBs. Color has great depth and richness. Its one flaw is some flowers have a 4th standard. It is a big advancement in my project to create SDBs that bloom into TB season. It begins bloom in early TB season. How cool to have a SDB for a TB timed show. The cross that created it, an IB X IB, shouldn’t have been fertile but it did have viable seed. Even more amazing, ‘Portland Pink’ is fertile. It can be picky about its partner but can have anywhere from a few to normal numbers of seed and they germinate. Shorty, the pod parent, is from a pink tetraploid MTB seedling X my SDB, ‘Juicy Tidbit’. The pollen parent is a multi-branched & budded IB from a small flowered TB, ‘Inspired’ sib X my SDB, ‘Love Spell’. Growth is strong and increase rapid. Although it is from 2 IBs, it has never exceeded SDB height. What about using it in hybridizing? Go on, have your way with it. It is fertile with SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. I haven’t tried MDBs. Expect wide variation in flower and plant size of seedlings.
