An abundance of ruffles, pleasing color contrasts, and all-around great garden performance make Beyond Fabulous a prime candidate for your garden. Light grayed cantaloupe centers blend to very wide pale icy blue-white bands. Dark blended dark purple falls have white hafts heavily lined and sanded dark maroon and are finished with medium wide icy white streaked bands. Two-toned beards are mid marigold, ending in light violet. Three branches provide 8-9 buds. Strong growth.

RAZZLE DAZZLE ME (P. Black '25)
TB Late-very late 31” (78.5cm) Slight sweet fragrance.
Can one possibly get more color on an iris? Probably, but this one makes a good run at it. Mid gold standards and styles top wide falls having mid red-purple centers with light grape finely sanded veins. Warm white hafts on each side of beards are heavily sanded and lined dark brown blended to dark black-brown edges. Moderate brassy khaki bands decorate the edges. Its pod parent Hotsy Totsy is an interesting parent for me. Two branches plus spur carry 7 buds.

PINK POODLE (P. Black '25)

This Pink Poodle is all clipped, fluffed, and ready to compete. Its rich pink color will dazzle the judges. Mid clear pink standards are heavily laced. Styles are mid coral pink, and mid-dark pink falls have tan-pink incised texture veins and plenty of lace. Darker pink beards will capture your eye. Robust growth produces stalks with three branches and 7-8 buds.

Box of Sunshine stood head and shoulders above its siblings of diverse blacks, purples, bitones, caramel blends, and even a plicata. Large, heavily ruffled flowers have standards of palest olive white blended to wide mid yellow bands. Strongly flared falls of milk glass white are decorated with mid yellow hafts and band. Its 3 branches carry 8-9 buds.

Here is another of the fantastic Crocodile Smile offspring with unique lined falls in various colors that I’ve been anxious to introduce. White standards have wide almost solid dark purple plicata bands and heavily stitched and sanded centers. White falls have intermittent lines over their centers and a solid center stripe. The number and length of lines is variable. I can’t wait to see more of its kids. Three branches and 8-9 buds is typical.

BALLROOM GOWN (Thomas Johnson ’26)

It is difficult to find the words to describe this one; the picture kind of says it all. Incredible form and with heavy substance, this stately luminata is characterized with a very wide rim on the standards. Intensely ruffled falls have a huge showy central luminata patch. At 39 inches, it is very tall for this pattern, which has tended to be on the shorter side. Show stems that can carry up to three branches, and spurs even on the branches, provide lots of buds for an extended bloom season. Rich, dramatic, and luxuriously ruffled, American Adventure makes a bold statement in the spring garden. The deep inky purple plicata markings over the muted white center of the standards contrast with the chalky white falls, which have a light purple fancy plicata wash that deepens to near black edges. Blooms are heavily textured and graced with artful rippling. Vigorous growth produces show stalks with 3 branches plus spur and branch spur, giving a superb 10-11 buds. HEAVEN’S ANGEL (Thomas Johnson ’26)

“Wow” is what I say whenever I see this one! The form is absolute perfection. Add a warm color confection to the large, wide, and heavily ruffled flowers, and you have a winner! Standards are warm, clear medium pink, with a cream edge. Falls are the lightest pink to near white, with a stunning lavender band. Beards are near white, so as to not distract from the whole package. Nicely branched and budded stems round it out as a must have. This is one I have been waiting to introduce since its maiden bloom. INNER DESIRE (Paul Black 26)

This intensely saturated jewel will captivate your heart. The interior of dark red-grape standards is white with wide plicata banding of mid red-grape. The falls have a mid blue-purple area surrounding mid tangerine beards, that first transitions to a wide, warm white, heavily plicata-marked band, before ending in a wide, rich wine-magenta band. Its unique color will draw you in for a closer look. Well-branched stalks have 4 branches and 7-8 buds. Unusual buds (fall reverse) are greenish cream heavily dotted mid grape. Here’s another in the limited realm of the strange broken color plicatas. Each flower is patterned differently. Typically marked standards have a light buttercream ground with a dark charcoal-purple wide rib, heavily plicata-sanded center, and wide band. White falls have light yellow variably-sized hafts, irregular broken color segments of wine to purple dotting and sanding, and a narrow dark wine plicata band. Sdlg. The pattern of Sky Whispers has intrigued me from the first moment I saw it. Standards are light blue-violet, veined darker, with a dark chartreuse edge. Style arms are light blue-violet, tipped dark chartreuse. Falls are full plum-purple, veined light plum purple, with dotted shoulders. Pale blue beards are heavily tipped old gold. Salmon to orange standards have a violet infusion up the midrib. Falls have a salmon orange ground that is heavily overlaid with mulberry purple. More of the salmon ground color shows through on either side of the dark mulberry belly stripe. Beautiful form on incredible stems that can have up to 4 branches, 4 spurs, and up to 16 buds. Mysterious One has been very valuable, not only for its beauty, but for its breeding potential for pink and orange ground plicatas. It is also a super strong and easy grower. Sdlg. SUNSHINE HEART (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Brilliant golden yellow standards rise above falls with a golden yellow center and a reddish violet overlay wash below the beard. The overlay becomes a deep reddish violet band, with a lighter rosy pink narrow edge. Lots going on in this flower for sure. Patterned iris like this one are so fun, in that the longer you look at them the more complex you realize the color scheme is.
