How about two thumbs up for visual impact in the landscape! Standards and styles are bright mid gold. A wide lighter tan gold blended band surrounds ruffled mid-dark mahogany falls. White hafts are veined dark mahogany. Beards are marigold. Stalks have 3 branches and 7-9 buds. Interesting plicata heritage. Strong growth.

We love Higher Love, it has beautiful ruffled flowers on nice stems and has color galore. Very light yellow standards are infused deep gold in the center and then veined medium gold . Falls are plush oxblood red encircled by a lavender violet band and finally rimmed with a quarter inch metallic gold edge. A favorite and recommended.

I have a bit of a fascination for beards especially on the SDBs. In my opinion the beard can make or break the flower. The large blue frosted beards on this canary yellow self definitely “make” the blooms on Hit the Jackpot. The white patch under and around the beard only adds to the contrast. Startling and beautiful in clump!!

Standards and styles are clear pink. Falls pale orchid intensifying to a deep orchid border. Tangerine beards lightening to white pink at the tip ending with a slightly deeper horn. 8 buds on nicely branched stalks. Big sister to All Rise and fairer more feminine colors.

‘Hold Me Now’ has amazing dark violet blue beards with just a brushing of chocolate over their tops. They are a colorful contrast to the mid pink standards and opaque pearl white falls that have darker pink hafts and lighter pink bands. Show stalks have ample buds to make a long bloom season. It is being used in hybridizing extensively for blue bearded pinks.

The pigment for a scarlet red bearded iris doesn’t exist. “Iris” red is a visual effect of an overlay of blue/purple and yellow. It is a deli- cate dance measured in subtle gradations and years of breeding. ‘Hottie’ makes one more tiny step in that direction. Some areas of the falls between the darker veins appear quite red, especially in “just the right sun”.

Standards are salmon to orange with a nice lightly laced edge. Falls are a very light rose, deepening toward the edge and nearly white below the beard. Hafts are orange on either side of the tangerine beard. Another one in the rich warm tones that glows in the sunshine. Very beautiful!

This exuberant IB has rampant growth and explodes with color from all the flowers. Pale peach styles peek out from mid purple standards. Dark purple falls have light peach luminata patches surrounding vivid orange beards. Falls have irregular light peach broken color streaks. Two branches plus spur provide 7 buds and a very long bloom season. Fertile IB.

And the dream is a very late blooming SDB with multiple branches spaced to allow all flowers to open freely. It’s now reality. Iridescent mid purple standards shine above purple black falls with white rays around burnt orange beards. Two branches plus spur have 6-7 buds. Excellent parent.

Great color and form. Light lilac standards blend to buff. Mid lilac falls have buff sanded veins around tangerine beards and silver rims. Four branches plus spur carry 10-14 buds.

IGNITE THE LIGHT (T. Johnson ’21)

It has been hard for me to capture the beauty of this one in a photo. Very light yellow standards are heavily flushed deep golden yellow at the base and in the center transitioning to veining at the edge. Falls are a rich reddish brown with a lemon yellow and white blended band. A clump of this blooming in the full sun is spectacular. An excellent garden iris that is well branched, budded and floriferous.

I'M BACK sets a new standard for form and color in reblooming irises. Not only will you love seeing it the first time, you'll long for it to return, and it will. Standards are medium lilac with rich dusty rose centers and along upper margins which are covered with a fine network of burgundy veins. Styles are dusty rose with crests veined dark burgundy. Falls are velvety black-cherry with paler rims and adorned with dark root beer beards. Each flower is well-formed and elegantly ruffled.

It’s much more fun to be a little wild and crazy and a bit mixed up. This broken color type will liven up your garden. Pale buff pink standards are randomly splashed mid lilac. Mid peach style crests are streaked lilac. Mid buff peach falls are randomly streaked from dark purple to light red purple. Hafts can be mid pink to butter. Each flower is different. Strong growth provides stalks with 2-3 branches and 7-9 buds. If you check out the second photo the color is not quite right but it shows the form so much better.
