Pink Standards; Falls have a light pink to white ground with a lavender stitched plicata band. Orange Beards are tipped white. We really like this plicata coming from non-traditional plicata breeding at least on the mother’s side. A strong grower and a fun color combination. Large flowers have nice wide and ruffled form. We have been hybridizing heavily with BEAUTICIAN.

Curve Ball is all about the beard. Lemon yellow standards; falls are white ground w/ a lemon overlay transitioning to a wide dark violet band. Very large tang. beards extend longer than usual down the fall. 7 buds on good stalks. Form is a bit funky but add to the appeal.

It’s much more fun to be a little wild and crazy and a bit mixed up. This broken color type will liven up your garden. Pale buff pink standards are randomly splashed mid lilac. Mid peach style crests are streaked lilac. Mid buff peach falls are randomly streaked from dark purple to light red purple. Hafts can be mid pink to butter. Each flower is different. Strong growth provides stalks with 2-3 branches and 7-9 buds. If you check out the second photo the color is not quite right but it shows the form so much better.

Slight fragrance. LEAVE ME BREATHLESS is exactly what happened when I first laid eyes on this one when it bloomed as a seedling for me the first time. I remember gasping when I got down to the end of the row and saw it. Large showy flowers scream LOOK AT ME! A very fun pattern indeed I am going to let the picture do the talking as far the color is concerned. Nice well branched stems carry 9 buds. A favorite that never fails to delight.

Brilliant golden yellow Standards. Falls are oxblood red with a wide mustard gold band and then a red wire edge. Extremely bright, almost shocking color combination! Very early to bloom on good stems with 8 buds. The falls remind me more of the spot pattern found in SDBs. FUN!!

Named after our little dog, Tula is a beauty that was labeled for introduction since its maiden bloom. Standards are an off white with light violet plicata dots and lemon flush throughout. Falls are interesting with white ground overlaid almost completely with deeper violet plicata dots. Adding to the interest are deep violet veins that extend from around the beard to petal edge. All of this is highlighted by very shocking medium lemon style arms that are very visible, creating a strong contrast. Three buds, good growth and bloom habits make this a garden favorite and a fun parent.

QUIGLEY (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Slight fragrance. I found it quite difficult to capture the unique beauty of Quigley in a photograph. I am still not completely satisfied. The color is more vibrant than the photo shows. It is one of those that I kept coming back to admire and study its unique coloration. Really fun in full clump, sorry I missed getting a good clump shot, but there is so much happening at once in the spring and such little time. Brassy gold standards with a little white ground showing in the centers. Falls have a white ground below the beard then cinnamon dotting and a central belly stripe. A brassy gold band encircles the fall. Very different and unique.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Combinations of the plicata pattern with other patterns have created a seemingly never ending universe of new and unique patterns and colors. One of those is a butterfly type design where a luminata patch would be. There will be many variations of these to come. This one has mid pink standards with subtle darker rose lines and outer edge. Velvety dark purple-black falls have white darted chevon haft patches overlaid with near black lines sandwiched between purple sanded veins in a modified butterfly pattern. Coral beards enhance its uniqueness. Clumps are gloriously filled with an abundance of stalks having 3 branches and 8-9 buds.

FEEL THE BEAT (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Milky white standards have medium lemon centers. Falls have a large maroon signal in the center that is touched gold on either side of the beard. The signal then bleeds down the fall and transitions to a solid deep lilac and finally becoming lighter lilac, forming a band at the petal’s edge. This has been a fun iris to hybridize with for the pansy face pattern. Oddly enough it is a sister to Loving Embrace which is a salmon amoena and Brilliant Debut which is a yellow amoena. FIELDS OF GOLD (T. Johnson ’23)

Light sweet fragrance. Standards are a deep lemon yellow with the edges being a light lemon. Falls are an interesting blend of lemon and maroon in the center giving somewhat of a brown effect. The petal edge of the fall is encircled in a wide cream and lemon blended band. The color of the fall can be quite different depending on the weather and the year. This last spring we were cool and wet the whole time and the flowers opened up a rich brown in the fall and then transitioned to the lighter color. Sweet fragrance. Deep plum standards and band on blue lavender falls. There is also a brown rayed patch on either side of the beard. Speaking of the beard, it is humongous!! Sweet fragrance. Standards are lavender with gold veining though out and a gold edge. Falls are white with a lilac and rose dotted band and a blue dart below the beard. This is a very fun patterned plicata. Web Of Lies is very tall and always with show stems. We also really love the form on this one. Sdlg. TK279ZZ: Unknown lost parentage.

MEGA RUFFLES (Paul Black 23)

Slight spicy fragrance If ruffles are your delight, then you’ll be on max overload with this exuberantly ruffled beauty. Light rosy peach standards blend to wide buttery yellow bands. Velvety dark red-grape falls have darker veins and lines overall and are encased in precise, closely packed light rose-pink bands. Tan-gold beards echo the standards color. With so many ruffles, these larger flowers open easily and completely. There are two branches and only 5 buds. Buds open one at a time so each can be fully appreciated and not shorten the bloom time. Light fragrance. Salmon pink standards. Falls are a medium blue purple with a wide deep red violet lined bar completely covering the haft and extending out the length of the beard. Your eyes will immediately be drawn to the very large and showy red beards. A very distinctive and fun iris for sure, with excellent growth and well branched show stems. Sdlg. FUNKY TOWN (Black ’24)

Musky fragrance. Over-the-top color and pattern are its hallmark. Is there room left for anything else? Thirty years ago such things were hardly imaginable. Veined and banded standards rise above falls with contrasting hafts, cascading centers, and a contrasting band. Wow! Add to that well-branched stalks with three branches and a spur with 10-12 buds.
