The extreme ruffles of Baltic Sea reminds us of the power of crashing, windswept waves as they curl toward the shore. Large, tightly formed medium marine blue flowers are breathtaking when seen singly or in clump. Beards are soft cream to blue-white. Strong growth produces stalks with 3 branches and about 9 buds. Heavy substance helps Baltic Sea maintain its lovely form even in the rain.

Slight fragrance. Rich butter yellow standards. Falls have a light creamy yellow base that is a near solid patch in center becoming a lined and rayed pattern that is overlaid mid to deep violet, then the petals are etched light yellow with a purple wire rim. Nicely ruffled and pleated flowers are extremely bright and showy. Quite a unique application of color and pattern. Lovely show stems and good bud count assure it to be a contender on the show bench. A favorite since its maiden bloom.

Sweet fragrance. Cream standards heavily infused and slightly veined butter yellow. Falls are a rich deep burgundy with a large deep yellow sunburst pattern. Feed The Flame starts the season and continues blooming all the way to the beginning of the late season bloomers. Nice stalks with plenty of buds to spare. Will make an extremely bright addition to the garden.

Light fragrance Peach-pink Standards. Falls are white with peach hafts and edge. Beards are tangerine with lavender-white at the end. The emphasis here is ruffles and more ruffles! The standards are extremely ruffled, creating a very feathery display. If you like ruffles you know there is “never enough”! Sweet fragrance. One of our favorite intros for this year and that is saying a lot with its competition and the fact that it is a plicata. The color on this is hard to convey in a picture as the presence it has in the garden. It is simply spectacular in clump with its extremely bright color and sharp pattern. Standards are icy white with a near solid overlay of blue lilac. The falls are white with a blue haft, center dart below beard, and band. Even the beard is tipped in blue. Gorgeous, wide, and ruffled form make it irresistible. Running In Circles has also been admired by garden visitors. Recommended! you won’t be sorry! Sdlg. Slight sweet fragrance. I have a bit of a love for orange amoenas and this one is no exception! Standards are cream with orange centers. Falls are a rich orange with deep red-orange beards. Sweet fragrance. Rich golden yellow standards have a maroon line in the center and some sporadic red dots. Falls have a deep yellow ground that is heavily overlaid with deep maroon red rays that become a solid band at petal edge. Tall well branched and showy stems. AMETHYST STARBURST (Black ’24)

Slight spicy fragrance. Taking the I. variegata veined fall pattern to an extreme. Makes a startling clump. Parentage involves mostly tets., but Amethyst Starburst looks diploid. Sdlg. Standards are very light yellow to white with a darker edge. Falls have a large yellow central sunburst area with a white flash below the beard. There is a very wide deep mahogany red band. The flowers are extremely wide and ruffled with a wild pattern.

DRAMATIC FINALE (T. Johnson ’25)

Standards have dark reddish violet centers with a wide blue violet area and then a lighter edge. Falls are the same with deep reddish violet hafts. The flowers on Dramatic Finale are extremely ruffled and a bit flared. Nice stems with good bud count are the norm. Dramatic Finale is very late and is not recommended in hot early climates such as Southern CA or Arizona where it may be susceptible to heat burn. It should be a great variety to close the season in the more northerly gardens.

Ooh la la! Look at that form!!! Truly, a stunning iris. Such a gorgeous shade of strawberry pink, with a lighter area below the awesome pink beard. Impeccable form in a beautiful color. Great stems and buds round it out. Probably one of the most, if not the most, gorgeous individual iris flowers I have seen. Its only flaw is that it is a very late flowering variety that does not like opening in extreme heat. A favorite from its maiden bloom, and one I can hardly wait to see flower each year.

Deep old gold standards are held over rich violet blue falls with reddish tones blended towards the edge. The flowers are large and extremely wide petalled creating a very full form. The lightly ruffled petals really help to show off the clean and sharp bicolor pattern. Nice stems, buds and growth make Power a really solid addition to the garden.
