Strong, well-branched stalks are able to showcase these giant-sized blooms without crowding. Lavishly ruffled standards have rosy mauve centers blended to wide light chalky gray lavender margins. Broad falls blend from pale violet blue to mid violet blue and gradually darkening to dark violet and banded dark plum. Two toned beards are gray tipped light coral and outward to mid violet. Stalks have 2 branches and 6-7 buds.

Border bearded irises are no longer sulky shrinking violets. ‘Boundless Berry’ is testament to that with its robust growth and showy clumps filled with bloom stalks. Compact, heavily ruffled flowers have light warm pink blooms. Fall hafts are rouged red plum and veined cream and shade lighter to narrow warm pink bands. Big, dark sienna beards are an interesting contrast. Show stalks have 3 branches and 7-9 buds. A moderate sweet fragrance is a plus.

White standards and edge on plum purple falls. Red beards really pop and add a brightness to the flower. Rule the World was labeled for introduction from its maiden bloom. Always a delight with its strong growth, heavy bloom and show stems. Truly a delight that never disappoints.

What a character this poor mixed up Scoundrel is. Be careful, you never know how he’s going to be on any given day. Light olive standards are irregularly splashed dark violet. Yellow styles are about the only stable part of Scoudrel. Centers of light olive falls are slate violet irregularly marked plum. Big, plush dark gold beards are flanked by gold hafts. Markings are quite variable depending on weather.

Here’s another of my genetic broken color types with strong growth and well- branched and budded stalks. Mid mulberry standards have limited random palest violet splashes. Falls have random streaks and splashes of mid mulberry and palest violet. Hafts are streaked plum and tan. Flowers are nicely ruffled and have a sweet fragrance. Show stalks have 2-3 branches and 7-9 buds. A more subtle broken color.

ZIP ZING ZOWIE (P. Black '21)

Your head spins round with the whirlwind of colors of this broken color type. White standards are randomly splashed light lilac and tan. Fall centers are white blended outward to mid yellow and narrowly edged white and then randomly streaked, splashed, veined and mottled varying shades of vibrant red plum. You won’t miss seeing these wildly colorful flowers. Three well-spaced branches produce 7-8 buds.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Precise even ruffling make ‘Wide Eyed’ a worthy candidate for your garden. The large bold dark plum purple spots on falls of mid violet blue blooms make it more so. Large gold beards are a perfect warm touch. Clumps filled with stalks are a delight.

Blue-green and white variegated foliage in itself is relatively rare but then add purple base foliage and it becomes something quite exceptional. It is also one of the more stable variegated foliage types. Flower color is variable ranging from brownish plum to red violet with some flowers having large broken color segments of both. Flowers on some stalks are quite uniform for color while others are more varied. White hafts are veined and mottled auburn. Variegated stalks have 3 branches and 7-9 buds.

Sweet fragrance. White ground standards are heavily overlaid deep blue purple with a deep plum to near black band. Falls are white with an inner band of deep blue purple dots and a more solid outer band of deep plum. The beard is an unusual blend with the hairs being blue purple at the base then white and finally yellow at the tips creating quite a complex treat. Evening Stroll has finally broken the link between shorter stature and lower bud count in the deep purple-black plicata lines. Seven to nine buds on tall well branched stalks are the norm. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Deep plum standards and band on blue lavender falls. There is also a brown rayed patch on either side of the beard. Speaking of the beard, it is humongous!! Sweet fragrance. Standards are pink with a flesh pink band and a gold edge. Falls are a rich plum violet with tangerine beards. This is a late variety. Light sweet fragrance. The markings and color of this iris remind me of a fine Monet painting. Standards are bordered dark apricot diffusing to medium plum purple in the center. The dark apricot styles are tinted purple and are fringed. Falls have wide borders of plum purple that streaks into the medium apricot center. Extending from the dark tangerine beards are plum purple belly stripes. Great stalks with three branches support 9-13 buds. 5217A: Hot Wired sib.

OH SO DIFFERENT (Paul Black 23)

No fragrance It takes center stage with one of the most dramatically unique flowers. Standards and falls are both a study in color and pattern. Light buffy tan blended standards are widely banded with fine dark plum filigree. Old gold style crests striped dark brown emerge from between them. White falls are a puzzle of purple black veins and sanding overall becoming darker and more closely spaced toward edges. White stitching on reverses adds more distinction. Slight sweet fragrance Sparkling pristine white flowers have standards decorated with wide vibrant mid violet plicata bands and sparse sanded veins over their centers. Amount of center markings varies considerably from sparse to overall. Contrasting dark plum style crests peak out over white falls with narrow mid purple plic bands. Dark wine sanded darts cover the hafts then give way to closely spaced light yellow veins. Light marigold to white beards are the perfect complement.
