It has been hard for me to capture the beauty of this one in a photo. Very light yellow standards are heavily flushed deep golden yellow at the base and in the center transitioning to veining at the edge. Falls are a rich reddish brown with a lemon yellow and white blended band. A clump of this blooming in the full sun is spectacular. An excellent garden iris that is well branched, budded and floriferous.

Medium pink Standards and edge on rose to lavender pink falls. Strange violet tipped orange beards add to the interest. Hard to convey the beauty of this one in a photo. Garden visitors often commented on their love for it.

Cream and light lemon blended standards with violet flush in center. Falls Have a large deep purple-violet center spot with a very wide lavender edge. Nicely ruffled flowers are real show stoppers. One that has been much admired since its maiden bloom.

He’s tall, dark and handsome and draws the eye of anyone walking by. Only the finest clothes will do for this Sharp Dressed Man. Standards are iridescent mid purple. Elegantly ruffled purple black falls have a velvety texture and slightly lighter rim. Only someone so confident could get by with such an outrageous orange tie. Show stalks with 3-4 branches and 10-12 buds help insure a superior garden performance. Robust, healthy growth. Colors are exceptionally clear.

Pink standards; falls are medium rosy pink in the center forming a deeper rosy pink blended band. Beautifully ruffled and even lightly laced petal edges on well-formed flowers carried on good stalks. Strawberry Bliss is a good grower and makes a beautiful clump. The flowers do fade with age but are still very lovely. Large shrimp pink beards certainly add to the attraction. One that has been much admired. Beautiful!!

Sweet fragrance. Striking and colorful variegata. Standards are blended honey tan and falls are rich smooth burgundy black. Beards black tan tipped tangerine orange. Interesting parent and should give some great seedlings. We made a cross in the Sutton Garden when it was in California; it is a major part of the pollen parent.

Sweet fragrance. Standards have golden yellow centers and icy blue-white edges. Falls are golden yellow with a white flash that extends from just below the beard and blends into a gold band near the petal edge. House Of Light is a very vigorous grower and is always one of the very first to start blooming. Strong show stems with ample buds make it an early season showstopper. A nice iris to kickstart the TB season.

SHOCKING SECRET (T. Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Shocking Secret was selected for introduction when I first laid eyes on it. It was in flower in the middle of a 20 row seedling patch. The patch was in full flower and still Shocking Secret stood out among the sea of color, staring at me with its deep signal as if to say “pick me”. Medium orchid to lavender self with pink tones infused in the standards. Falls are the same, only with a large dark black cherry signal that surrounds the orange beards. Nicely branched and budded with good form. Yet another introduction from When Doves Cry, proving to be an excellent parent. To say it is dramatic is an understatement.

Sweet fragrance. A very early and long blooming variety, definitely in the top ten to start the season. Marked as an introduction from its maiden bloom it has performed consistently every year. A bit hard to capture but the color is so bright in the sun it appears on fire. Beautiful full ruffled form and show stems with ample buds. Brilliant gold standards sit atop rich burgundy red falls with orange beards. A definite garden favorite.

Sweet fragrance. Standards have a cream ground that is almost completely overlaid with gold and a crystalline white petal edge. Falls are white with a lilac blue plicata band and dotted bar on either side of the beard. I simply love this iris. The color combination is so unique and carries the wow factor when in flower. Tall well branched stalks beckon to you from across the garden.

Sweet fragrance. White ground standards are heavily overlaid deep blue purple with a deep plum to near black band. Falls are white with an inner band of deep blue purple dots and a more solid outer band of deep plum. The beard is an unusual blend with the hairs being blue purple at the base then white and finally yellow at the tips creating quite a complex treat. Evening Stroll has finally broken the link between shorter stature and lower bud count in the deep purple-black plicata lines. Seven to nine buds on tall well branched stalks are the norm. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Standards are marine blue violet with a white band. Falls are a deep rich blue violet with a white edge and striping on the sides. There is a large white luminata patch around the beard and a short white dart below the beard. The hafts are touched orange which helps to draw the eye into the flower. Sweet fragrance. Standards are a coral pink to light orange. Falls are pink with a lighter cream area below the beard. Lightly scented. LOVELY LIVVY (T. Johnson ’23) TB early-midseason 35” (89cm) Lightly scented. This gorgeous iris is named to honor the late great Olivia Newton-John. Olivia was not only a very talented celebrity but she was a gorgeous human being. Although I never met her, I certainly followed her career and life. Always a kind, warm and loving person, she never acted the celebrity, taking time to acknowledge all who came upon her. She courageously fought breast cancer in an out of remission for 20 years. Never one to complain she always looked on the positive side of things. The latter part of her life was dedicated to finding a cure for Cancer. She founded the Oliva Newton-John Cancer And Wellness Centre In Melbourne, Australia, the country she called home. Here she tirelessly raised money to support cancer research using plant-based treatments. Lovely Livvy was the pet name the media used throughout Olivia’s life to describe her. The iris we have chosen to honor her kind of named itself. Firstly, it is pink, the color of breast cancer awareness. On top of that, I made the cross in the garden of Barry and Lesley Blyth (using two of Barry’s seedlings), who live only miles from where Olivia grew up. Lovely Livvy is an extraordinary and unique creation in a color combination that has not yet been seen in iris until now. White standards are flushed pink. Falls are a deeper rose pink with a gorgeous ruffled white band. Olivia with her kind and generous heart inspired me to do my part, so I donated a portion of the proceeds of each plant sold in its introductory year (2023) to her Cancer research centre in Australia.
