Big, round and buxom. She was ‘Born this Way’. Frothy, exuberantly ruffled fuchsia rose falls are widely banded near white with an interesting veined transition between central color and banding. Strong well-branched stalks carry these beauties in regal fashion. Easy increaser. Unfortunately the cross tag was lost.

Icy blue white standards are heavily flushed melon orange in centers. Petal edges are touched lemon. Falls are a full medium salmon to orange with bright tangerine to red beards. As an added touch the peekaboo style crests are orange. Tall and well branched for the early season.

Yes, it will always be a puzzle as to what the parentage is since the tag was lost. ‘Puzzled’ is such a unique creation that most people won’t care. Standards are buttery peach with orangish texture veins. Wide and ruffled falls are an interesting irregular maroon wash over light lavender ground blending lighter toward edges. Beards are dark orange. Show stalks have ample buds. Growth is strong and increase abundant.

Apart from its excellent production of show stems, this lovely Iris should really charm the judges. The standards are white with a faint flush of soft pink at the midribs. The falls are wide and lightly ruffled and pastel peach over cream. Some light tan veining radiating from the hafts. Very fertile. Organza, its pod parent is proving to be a super parent.

Cream to flesh pink standards that are heavily infused antique to rose pink in centers. Falls are deeper flamingo to rose pink with tangerine beards. Nicely formed and ruffled flowers are carried on show stems with 11 buds early in the season. Coming out of a cross made with two Blyth seedlings. Very nice!

Slight fragrance. Blue white standards with a strong pink flush in the center. Falls are a rich flamingo pink with a red beard. A striking color combination with well branched and budded stems. A very rich and vibrant approach to a pink amoena.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Be careful this intriguing character doesn’t sneak up on you. Swirling mid to light slate blue standards are flushed darker gray violet up midribs. Ruffled mustard yellow falls have paler centers and are veined darker gold. Show stalks with 3 branches and spur have 8-10 buds which is characteristic of both parents. Robust growth ensures this gator will be back year after year.

BRILLIANT DEBUT (Thomas Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. White standards with yellow centers and irregular lemon markings at the petal edges. Falls are deep lemon yellow with a white area below bright orange beards. Not just another yellow and white iris, there was no denying this one’s introduction. Highly visible from clear across the field on its tall well branched stems. ONE IN A MILLION (T. Johnson ’23)

No fragrance. To the best of our knowledge this is the first TB flat plicata to be introduced, thus the name. No standards and 6 falls. The style arms are etched on the crests with the same pattern as is on the edge of the falls. The falls are white then bordered and stitched red violet. Sometimes but not always each fall will have a center belly stripe of violet that appears as a narrow straight line extending from the beard to the petal edge. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Standards are lavender with gold veining though out and a gold edge. Falls are white with a lilac and rose dotted band and a blue dart below the beard. This is a very fun patterned plicata. Web Of Lies is very tall and always with show stems. We also really love the form on this one. Sdlg. TK279ZZ: Unknown lost parentage.

Slight fragrance. This iris has fascinated me since its maiden bloom. The pattern is different especially for a horned variety. Standards and styles are a medium coral pink. Flaring falls are like a zebra. Is it medium orchid violet with pink veins or deep pink with medium orchid violet veins? The falls also have a defined narrow band of pink-orchid. Tangerine beards end with light violet horns that are always consistent. 6 to 7 buds. Sdlg. 5417: 3013B: (4211A, lost cross x Florentine Silk) X 7714, lost cross.

HOT WIRED (L. Miller ’23)

Light fragrance. Not just another plicata! Standards are mostly solid rich maroon with slight undertones of apricot in the center. The lacey edges of the very dark apricot styles are trimmed in maroon. Flaring falls have apricot-peach ground bordered by a solid maroon edge that turns to dots as it extends from the burnt dark orange beards. 9 to 10 buds on well branched stalks. PERKY LASS (L. Miller ’23)

Slight sweet fragrance. As I work toward pink ground plicatas interesting combos are happening. The standards of Perky Lass are light pinkish salmon, lightly washed light violet. Falls are pinkish-salmon bordered with heavy maroon dotting, heaviest beside striking dark tangerine beards. 7 to 8 buds are held on show stalks. Sdlg. 5817C: 9813A, Lost cross X Powder Keg.

PURE PURPLE (Paul Black 23)

Pronounced sweet fragrance The name says it all – it’s purple. Mid purple standards and styles color repeats in a narrow band around dark purple falls. Black to indigo-black beards are lost in the darkness of the falls. Strong growth and disease resistant foliage produce quality show stalks with 3 branches plus spur and 8-9 buds. Sdlg. Light fragrance. Beautifully formed white with an inner glow of lavender in the heart of the flower, becoming lighter around the icy lavender white beards.
