The soft light orchid of the standards is blended over the soft pink falls. A slight metallic sheen adds a touch of mystery. Mid pink styles provide a bit of contrast as do the shrimp beards. Three branches are graced with 7-9 buds on easy to grow plants.

The accent here is on the round, lightly ruffled and strongly flared falls. The falls of these pristine white flowers are blended light to mid blue over their centers leaving a wide white band and a patch around the beard. Stalks are distributed evenly throughout the clump, so flowers are never crowded.

It has strong aril characteristics including the bold burgundy blaze. Mid orchid standards surround mid apricot gold styles. Mid peach apricot hafts blend to mid violet centers banded darker dusky rose. Wide marigold beards narrow to light lavender scruffy ends. Two branches and 5 buds give it a good season of bloom.

BRIGHT AND SHINING STAR (P. Black ‘20)

This is the closest to a dark blue amoena I’ve seen. Others have varying widths of white bands. ‘By The Sea’ does have a white wire rim which accents the blue fall. It produces many stalks on vigorous plants. Clumps create an immediate focal point in the landscape.

Gold standards with slight violet line up the midrib. Falls are lavender purple with deep gold thumbprints on either side of brilliant tangerine beards. A brown band around the falls brings the whole pattern to life. Wide overlapping falls, an easy grower and very floriferous, Diamond Heart is a welcome addition to the early season.

A new era of brightly colored, wider and more ruffled tetraploid MTBs is emerging from mixed chromosome breeding. This parentage includes SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. The SDB pollen parent, ‘April Fanfare’, can have 2 branches and 6 buds which helps make it an excellent tet MTB parent. This bright bicolor has unique peach styles and the pattern is pumila spot plicata. ‘FLIRTIN’ SKIRTS’ will make a memorable clump. Can be used in breeding in all median classes and TBs. I’m using it to hopefully produce pumila spot plics in TBs.

This exuberant IB has rampant growth and explodes with color from all the flowers. Pale peach styles peek out from mid purple standards. Dark purple falls have light peach luminata patches surrounding vivid orange beards. Falls have irregular light peach broken color streaks. Two branches plus spur provide 7 buds and a very long bloom season. Fertile IB.

It’s much more fun to be a little wild and crazy and a bit mixed up. This broken color type will liven up your garden. Pale buff pink standards are randomly splashed mid lilac. Mid peach style crests are streaked lilac. Mid buff peach falls are randomly streaked from dark purple to light red purple. Hafts can be mid pink to butter. Each flower is different. Strong growth provides stalks with 2-3 branches and 7-9 buds. If you check out the second photo the color is not quite right but it shows the form so much better.
