Pronounced spicy fragrance. If broken colored sorts are your proclivity, ‘Too Mixed Up’ should be on your must have list. Flowers are the ultimate in ruffled form but buds are bit lacking at 6-7. Standards are silvery white with random dashes, segments and slashes of violet to red violet. Falls are the same except rosy peach hafts. Two colored beards have tangerine throats ending in light lavender. Vigorous growth.

WATERS EDGE (P. Black '22)

Pronounced sweet fragrance. The base of mid violet-blue standards blend outward to icy white. Milk-glass white falls have narrow blended light blue bands and blue-gray texture veins. Tan-gold beards end in white. Three branches and 7-8 buds.

WHAT A LOOKER (P. Black '22)

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Pink, pink and nothing but pink including the beards. The pink pigment is overlaid on a warm white ground that prevents contamination from any other color. The pink beards approaching red will make anyone stop and turn with admiring glances. It is a garden favorite that catches most everyone’s eyes. Eight to nine more simply formed flowers are presented on three perfectly spaced branches. Robust blue-green foliage is a big plus for pink TBs that can have less than stellar foliage.

Pronounced spicy fragrance Absolutely beautiful in every way – form, color and plants. Sweet fragrance. This smaller flowered tall bearded beauty traces back to ‘Passionate Embrace’ and the unusually colored flowers it produces, particularly in the citrus colors. Its myriads of show stalks cover the clumps in bloom. The white fall bands make it pop. Contrasting style arms are characteristic of ‘Passionate Embrace’ offspring, as are unique colors and show branched stalks. Sdlg. Stare Into My Eyes makes a significant advancement in the buds and branching of quarter arilbred irises. It is a big favorite. Strong stalks have two well-spaced branches plus spur and 7-8 buds. It is vigorous and as easy to grow as other bearded irises. White standards have light yellow centers blended to wide white bands shot with light yellow veins. Falls have big purple signals irregularly blended into wide light amethyst bands. Because of its later bloom, you’ll be able to take it to a show.

BODACIOUS BEARD (P. Black '25)
BB Midseason-late 27” (68.5cm) Slight sweet fragrance.
There is no ignoring this exceptionally nice creation. Its big bushy mid marigold beards demand you stop and look. Standards and narrow band on white falls are mid gold. Perfectly proportioned show stalks have three branches and 9-10 buds. Near perfection. Exciting parentage.

Quarter arilbreds keep getting better and better, and more aril looking, with the big plus that they are easy to grow. Awesome white standards have light yellow centers and lined filigree with mid yellow styles peeking out. The light-yellow base of falls are washed and blended mid rose. Dark black-cherry streaked chevron signals surround brassy old gold beards.

Large, oncocyclus type blooms have white standards with fine amethyst lined filigree overall. Mid maroon falls are finely filigreed with darker lines. Bold black signals compel you to have a close-up look. Stunning!

Its brilliant color ensures this easy to grow arilbred won’t be overlooked. The falls of bright mid gold flowers are washed light coppery red, becoming lighter to their edge. A bold dark-mid black cherry to ruby blended chevron signal surrounds mid caramel beards. There are two branches and five buds.

It is another of my late blooming, multiple budded and branched SDBs. The flowers are a miniaturized version of Bride’s Halo. White flowers have narrow light yellow bands. Show stalks have three branches and 8-9 buds. Unheard of for a SDB. From two of my favorite varieties.

Nothing but lilting bright mid yellow flowers and beards. Clumps are filled with stalks and myriads of flowers making for a superb landscape iris. Well-branched stalks have two branches plus spur and 7-8 buds.

Gold Ripples is one of the most vigorous and floriferous SDBs in the garden. Beautifully ruffled dark slate gold flowers are minimally plicata marked dark brown. Mid marigold beards brighten this more subtle flower.

EPILOGUE (P. Black '25)

Epilogue is another iris people have been waiting for. It is from my long running attempt to put lace on SDBs. The fall edges of this pretty flower are serrated but not truly laced. It seems I may never hit the goal. Light pink standards have light gilt yellow bands. Light pink styles look out over falls having light-mid yellow hafts and wide blended band with pale flesh pink centers.
