For many years I have worked with plicatas that are the result of outcrosses to bicolors, to increase vigor and bring more diversity in color and pattern. Future Dreams is so named because of the wide-ranging breeding potential in this pattern. Standards are deep lavender purple with darker maroon veining. Falls are white with a deep maroon haft and band. If that weren’t enough, upon closer inspection, you will notice broken color within the band. A totally unique and distinctive color and pattern variation in plicatas. Flowers are well-formed, and carried on strong show stems with lots of buds. Heart And Soul has a pattern that one would be more likely to see in an SDB: a large, plush, deep burgundy fall spot on super brilliant canary yellow to gold petals. The colors are so bright, especially in the sun, that one wants to reach for the sunglasses! Absolutely amazing, and shows from clear across the field. A striking garden standout, this broken color iris showcases an artful blend of light to mid violet and creamy white, brushed and splashed together so no two blooms are alike. Heavily ruffled standards rise above broad, arched falls capped with white to marigold beards. Strong upright stems have 3 well-spaced branches plus spur and 8-9 buds. Oh Here I Am was planted at the end of a row this past season, and it put on an amazing show. Very light salmon pink standards are echoed in the hafts of the nearly white falls, and emphasize the nice white-tipped orange beard. Perfectly formed flowers are held on tall, well-branched show stems. This iris is an exhibitor’s dream; it will win on the show bench, and bloom for a long period in the garden. A tall show-stopping iris with persuasive garden presence. Broad, ruffled, mid navy-blue standards rise above dramatic, expansive, darkest navy falls, etched with fine veining centered around a brooding golden sienna beard that adds striking contrast. Mid pink standards are washed light mauve. Delicately ruffled palest pink tinted falls have narrow mid violet-blue plicata banding. Its dark orange beard ends in a near black dart. Moderately sized flowers displayed on graceful taller stems make a visually pleasing clump. Vigorous growth produces show stalks with 4 branches and 7-8 buds. Sdlg. This gorgeous pink iris was named It’s A Wrap because we always know that when it starts to bloom we are heading towards the end of the bloom season. Marked for introduction from its maiden bloom, we have been patiently building stock and are excited to finally offer it. This gorgeous pink self is slightly lighter below the beards, which are a wonderful shade of shrimp pink. This glorious color is displayed on perfectly formed flowers that are wide, ruffled, and lightly laced. This pattern is so clear and matter of fact that I thought it deserved a name that is a strong statement. Looking Like That is bold and beautiful, and creates quite a stir. Standards are complex, with deep lemon centers becoming the lightest lavender, then showing lemon veining at the edge. Falls are rich deep lavender, with a massive deep burgundy signal and yellow orange beards. Fantastic stems that are well branched and held high above the foliage set the stage for quite a show. Standards have a medium blue pink center becoming lighter towards the edge. Falls are lavender white with a dotted blue lavender plicata edge with pink undertones. Beards are a mixture of orange, lavender and white, adding another dimension in this very pleasing and warm color combination. Really a very beautiful and elegant iris, that has lots of buds on nice show stems. Parentage is unknown.

LUCKY TICKET (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Lucky Ticket is nearly a pure orange amoena, and it shows as such in the field. It is only on closer inspection that one notices the pink flush up the standards. Salmon to orange standards have a violet infusion up the midrib. Falls have a salmon orange ground that is heavily overlaid with mulberry purple. More of the salmon ground color shows through on either side of the dark mulberry belly stripe. Beautiful form on incredible stems that can have up to 4 branches, 4 spurs, and up to 16 buds. Mysterious One has been very valuable, not only for its beauty, but for its breeding potential for pink and orange ground plicatas. It is also a super strong and easy grower. Sdlg. This iris is for the lovers of brown. Now if we could just make the standards a clean white, we could take it to the next level. At any rate, it is truly stunning as is. Standards are creamy white, with a heavy dose of deep lemon infused up through the center. Falls are a rich brown, with a lighter amber yellow edge. PRETTY MUCH IT (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Plicatas are such an interesting and fun group because of the variability that you can get. In general terms, one would describe this as a purple plicata, but Pretty Much It is so much more than that! Standards are white with a green flush up the midrib. Falls are pristine white, with a narrow stitched violet edge, and then a deeper violet wire rim. Hafts are touched deep red violet, and there is a small violet dart below the beard. Even the beard is a strange blend of orange and white. Upon closer inspection and as the flower ages a bit, the standards open slightly to show the gorgeous contrasting deep gold style crests from inside. The flowers are large and extremely wide and ruffled. Stems are tall, well branched and balanced, and display the beauty of the pattern perfectly. Sdlg. TO163B: Say It Right X Castle On The Hill

PUZZLE PIECE (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Iris have become such complex beings when it comes to patterns and application of color. The standards are pretty straight forward, being a brilliant golden yellow, but the falls are a bit more complex. There is a large and plush mahogany red signal spot in the center, but things get complicated in the band. There is a large wide band that circles the signal, but instead of it being one consistent color, it starts out as a light lavender and lemon blend at the haft, about half way down transitions to lemon, and finally shows deep gold at the distal end. The standard color reflecting itself at the distal end of the fall draws the eye across the whole flower and creates a very pleasing presentation. Standards are very light lavender white, with golden violet veining that becomes more prominent in the gold band. Falls are very deep velvety purple, with a strong white ground displaying the sunburst veining pattern emanating out from around and below the gold orange beard. River Vein is an early variety that puts on a fantastic show at the beginning of the bloom season. Show stems, vigorous plants, and plenty of buds are the norm. Sdlg.
