Jackie is one of my best friends. She has always been a big help by leaving pink post-it notes on seedlings she thinks I should keep. We’ve had many good laughs together. She also insists on helping me plant my iris seeds each fall. Of course I wouldn’t hurt her feelings by saying no. She makes it all fun. She likes brown irises, so for her here is a white and dark red-brown plicata. Note the pronounced lines in the falls. Strong stalks have three branches and 8-9 buds. This is one of many exceptional seedlings coming from Crocodile Smile.

Here is another of the fantastic Crocodile Smile offspring with unique lined falls in various colors that I’ve been anxious to introduce. White standards have wide almost solid dark purple plicata bands and heavily stitched and sanded centers. White falls have intermittent lines over their centers and a solid center stripe. The number and length of lines is variable. I can’t wait to see more of its kids. Three branches and 8-9 buds is typical.

She is all dressed up for her picture perfect moment. White ground standards have wide solid dark maroon bands and heavy overall plicata sanded centers. Interiors of the standards have white ground with plicata marks similar to falls. Broad white falls have mid red-violet sanding within wide dark maroon plicata bands. Widely spaced dark maroon lines traverse the centers. Three branches have 8-9 buds. Strong growth.

WITCHES STITCHES (P. Black '25)

Glinda the Good Witch put her magic to work and created this enchanted plicata that has only a stitched band around the falls. Usually there is another color, sanding, or plicata marks. Standards are white with light violet-blue stitched plicata bands, but with lighter violet-blue shading in between. Falls are white with wide dark violet stitched plicata bands. Widely spaced greenish texture veins traverse the center. Stalks have three branches and 9-11 buds.

GLOWING MAGIC (P. Black '25)

This luscious glaciata is a blended medley of mid pink to peach with mid apricot hafts and bands. Glaciatas are prone to virus. So far this lovely creation has remained virus free. Strong growth produces stalks with 3 branches and 7-8 buds. An excellent parent for all types of plicatas. One of my favorite irises, with an added bonus of medians in its background.

CALYPSO JOE (P. Black '25)

Imagine loads of sun, sandy beaches, and music with a Latin beat when Calypso Joe appears in his flamboyant attire. The light butter ground of the standards is widely banded dark wine with random plicata marks over their centers. Bright mid yellow falls have dark wine hafts extending beyond the root beer beard and ending in an irregular dart. The plicata markings are wide in upper 1/3 then becoming narrow. Robust growth produces strong stalks with 3 branches and 9-10 buds. Quite a showstopper.

CINNAMON SURPRISE (P. Black '25)

This sibling to Calypso Joe is considerably more sedate. Mid-light yellow centers of the standards blend to mid Dijon gold. Mid-light yellow falls have light cinnamon plicata hafts, becoming narrower and lighter at the distal end. Vigorous growth and show stalks make it a desirable addition to your garden.

DEVIL IN DISGUISE (P. Black '25)

The disguise is a brilliant success. Who’d expect anything evil about this lavish blending of dark to mid purples adorned with an angelic near white beard. Super wide falls with lightly ruffled edges allow an unobstructed display of its alluring color. Minimal plicata marking of the standards at the midrib hint at its plicata heritage. Three well-spaced branches carry 9-10 buds.

COSMETOLOGIST (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Sweet fragrance This is a plicata pattern that has a lot going on. Standards have a very light lavender ground with lavender dotting showing in the center and then becoming a medium lemon band. Falls are a light lavender white ground with a deep burgundy haft bar and a faint lilac lavender dotted edge. Even the beard is complex with a white ground and orange and burgundy hair tips, changing from the end as it moves towards the heart of the flowers. Coming from a line of plicatas that are not from traditional plicata breeding lines but from bicolor lines where recessive plicatas have appeared. Very nice form, buds and stems. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance For many years I have worked with plicatas that are the result of outcrosses to bicolors to increase vigor and bring more diversity in color and pattern. Future Dreams is named as such because of the wide-ranging breeding potential in this pattern. Standards are deep lavender purple with darker maroon veining. Falls are white with a deep maroon haft and band. If that is not enough upon closer inspection you will notice broken color within the band. A totally unique and distinctive color and pattern variation in plicatas. Flowers are well formed and carried on strong show stems with lots of buds. ‘Future Dreams’ has a good pedigree and once again shows the importance of ‘Tenacity’ as a parent both for quality and diversity. Slight fragrance Icy blue white standards. Falls are white with a wide lilac blue stitched and dotted band. Beards are red. ‘Guess What’ is a very strong grower and prolific bloomer. Well-formed flowers are carried on beautifully branched and budded stems. Really a gorgeous bloom with the overall effect being a blue plicata with a red beard. Parentage is unknown due to mixed cross tags.

Broad white falls are boldly framed with a narrow mid violet-blue plic band and dramatic solid hafts. Mid blue beards are a subtle complement. No fragrance This intensely saturated jewel will captivate your heart. The interior of dark red-grape standards is white with wide plicata banding of mid red-grape. The falls have a mid blue-purple area surrounding mid tangerine beards then transitioning to wide a warm white heavily plic marked band then to a wide rich wine-magenta band. Its unique color will draw you in for a closer look. Well-branched stalks have 4 branches and 7-8 buds. Unusual buds (fall reverse) are greenish cream heavily dotted mid grape. Pronounced sweet fragrance Here’s another in the limited realm of the strange broken color plicatas. Each flower is patterned differently. Typically marked standards have light buttercream ground with dark charcoal purple heavily plicata sanded center and dark charcoal purple rib and wide band. White falls have light yellow variably sized hafts and irregular broken color segments of wine to purple dotting and sanding and narrow dark wine plic band. Sdlg. Pronounced sweet fragrance Beware of the dark side lurking here. Mid red-purple standards blend lighter toward their edge. Open standards reveal showy rose and gold styles. Velvety dark purple falls shade to near black margins. Light tangerine over white beards rest in a white luminata plicata patch. There are sometimes random white streaks and splashes.
