STARRY STARRY NIGHT (P. Black '22)

Slight musky fragrance It is a night you’ll long remember. Classically formed, ruffled and lightly laced purple black flowers have standards with white sanded veins over their centers that show their plicata heritage. White fall hafts have closely spaced purple black lines and sanded veins transitioning to velvety purple black falls. Butterscotch beards turn to white climaxing in a white shooting star dart for a dramatic accent. It has a stunning presence even before opening. Bud reverses have chartreuse haft centers streaking into white center bands then white veins streaking into dark purple outer bands. It is an awesome look. Sturdy growth produces 4 well-spaced branches but only 7 buds. As if this wasn’t enough, it has been a mystery progenitor of many broken color plicatas. There is nothing in the parentage to suggest this trait. I’m still exploring its potential. In one cross, about a third of the seedlings looked like it, a third were standard plicata types and a third were broken color plicatas. There is much to be explored!

TOO MIXED UP (P. Black '22)

Pronounced spicy fragrance. If broken colored sorts are your proclivity, ‘Too Mixed Up’ should be on your must have list. Flowers are the ultimate in ruffled form but buds are bit lacking at 6-7. Standards are silvery white with random dashes, segments and slashes of violet to red violet. Falls are the same except rosy peach hafts. Two colored beards have tangerine throats ending in light lavender. Vigorous growth.

AMBROSIA OF THE GODS (Paul Black 23)

Pronounced sweet fragrance. The heady fragrance of these sturdily constructed flowers is a delight to the gods. Lightly laced light peach apricot standards repeat in wide light peach bands around cream falls. Zingy mid burnt orange beards give an inner warmth. Slight fragrance. Creamy white standards are heavily overlaid with light plum in the centers with a flesh pink band. White ground falls have a wide dramatic purple to near black band and center stripe. Vivid tangerine beards complete this dramatic look. Super strong grower that is a very prolific bloomer. Sweet fragrance. Wow! This is a favorite that I look forward to blooming each year. Such a strange but pretty and intriguing combination of colors. Pronounced sweet fragrance ‘Blackberry Bandit’ is sure to seduce you and never break your heart. Clean, husky growing plants produce show stalks with 3 branches and spur plus 8-9 buds. Light fragrance. Medium rose-lavender-pink standards and edge on lighter pink falls. There is a darker pink blush on either side of the beautiful saturated pink beards. Very nice ruffled and laced form on nice show stems. As You Wish is an easy grower and has been used heavily in hybridizing. This is an iris that we like a lot!! Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Icy blue white standards with green veins in the center. Falls are white with a lavender rim. Inside the rim are random violet dots. The hafts have deep violet lines and there is a center line of violet below the beard. Beards are white with orange hair tips. A beautiful take on a purple and white plicata. Sweet fragrance. Orange Standards are a bit lighter and with some gold influence at the edges. Falls are Yellow-orange with a white spot below the brilliant tangerine-red beard. Sweet fragrance. Standards are a bright gold with a bit of maroon shot up the midribs. Falls are a medium maroon with yellow influences giving it the appearance of a sort of brown with a lighter edge. A color combination not often seen and a good iris for those who love brown. Sweet fragrance. Dark burgundy-maroon standards are edged with a wide gold band. Falls are a deep beetroot red to near black with a narrow gold edge. The central white luminata patch has gold touched hafts on both sides. Heavily ruffled flowers are a delight to behold. Here Comes Trouble is a strong grower with fast increase and a prolific bloomer. She has been very popular with garden visitors. Sdlg. Light sweet fragrance. Standards are medium pink in the center, then becoming white with pink veins and finally forming a pink rim. Falls are white with a rose-pink band and a white tipped orange beard. Just Between Us is lovely in every way. The ruffled form is beautiful, it is a good grower and has nicely branched stems. Light sweet fragrance. Very light lavender to white standards with a bit of pink at the base. Falls are a rich medium lavender. This is an iris that we adore. The flowers are so immense and with the wide ruffles it looks like floating clouds when it is in full flower. It is so hard to capture its true grandeur in a photograph. Lovely and an easy grower.
