This was my favorite seedling out of all of the BB year seedlings. I returned repeatedly to have another look. There is such an overwhelming amount of color and patterning that one viewing isn’t enough to take it in. It is another Crocodile Smile child, which shows its importance as a parent. Warm white standards have a wide light violet plicata outer band and a wide light khaki tan sanded and lined plicata band. Style arms are contrasting dark gold. White falls have wide dark violet to dark plum lined and sanded plicata bands. Rich brown beards are the perfect accent. Three branches produce 8-9 buds.

WITCHES STITCHES (P. Black '25)

Glinda the Good Witch put her magic to work and created this enchanted plicata that has only a stitched band around the falls. Usually there is another color, sanding, or plicata marks. Standards are white with light violet-blue stitched plicata bands, but with lighter violet-blue shading in between. Falls are white with wide dark violet stitched plicata bands. Widely spaced greenish texture veins traverse the center. Stalks have three branches and 9-11 buds.

What makes this light blue bitone with falls veined darker mid-blue special? I think it is the best attempt so far to put a pink beard on a blue iris. It has been a challenge for many hybridizers. Its other special feature is the clumps filled with bloom stalks creating an overpowering display of color in the garden. To say it is floriferous is an understatement, and yet, there is plenty of increase left.

DISCO PARTY (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Slight fragrance This beauty certainly reminds me of a wild disco party. Clean medium lemon-yellow standards are the perfect match for the wildly patterned falls. Falls can best be described as having a large canary yellow sunburst center. Then as we move down the petal there is a lavender to maroon wash that is then encircled with a lemon band. Slight musky fragrance I have been working on the “pansy face” pattern, or you could say “signal” pattern in TB’s for quite a few years. Trying to get different colors in the pattern has been fun. ‘Eye Love You’ has a lot going on in the color department. Standards are a flesh to peach with large pink centers and a lavender infusion up the midrib. Falls are a light lavender with a deep maroon signal. Upon close inspection there is a very faint lighter peach band. The orange beard sitting on top of the maroon signal just makes the whole thing pop. Slight musky fragrance This ride gives striking, high-contrast colors with exceptional pattern and texture. Standards rise in softly ruffled layers of warm rosy mauve delicately plic stitched mid grayed mauve. Broad falls open creamy white dramatically etched and feathered in deep grape-purple concentrating along the margins and radiating inward in fine lines for a bold, artistic effect. Slight fragrance Icy blue white standards are slightly darker at the edge. Falls are icy blue white with a deep indigo band and yellow haft. There is the typical Emma Cook pattern but with a much deeper band than usual and a yellow haft. The band appears near black to the eye from across the garden. Slight sweet fragrance The simply formed mid violet flowers are nothing you’ll get excited about. The appeal is the green and white variegated foliage with some purple base. Pronounced sweet fragrance Beware of the dark side lurking here. Mid red-purple standards blend lighter toward their edge. Open standards reveal showy rose and gold styles. Velvety dark purple falls shade to near black margins. Light tangerine over white beards rest in a white luminata plicata patch. There are sometimes random white streaks and splashes. Light fragrance very light lemon-yellow standards. Large deep lemon style crests peek out from inside to add contrast. Falls are white with a nice rosy violet band. There is a large light lemon-yellow central sunburst that then transitions into a blue violet brindled wash and finally a wide lavender band. The whole effect is stunning! No fragrance Icy blue white standards have lemon bases and a gold halo. Falls are white with a blue band and lemon hafts. Beards are more yellow than orange giving the flower a brightness and light. Best of all is the plant habits. Vigorous plants cover themselves with an abundance of tall well branched stems creating an amazing floral display. Sweet fragrance Plicatas are such an interesting and fun group because of the variability that you can get. In loose terms one would describe this as a purple plicata but ‘Pretty Much It’ is so much more than that! Standards are white with a green flush up the midrib. Falls are pristine white with a narrow stitched violet edge and then a deeper violet wire rim. Hafts are touched deep red violet and there is a small violet dart below the beard. Even the beard is a strange blend of orange and white. Upon closer inspection and as the flower ages a bit the standards open slightly to show the gorgeous contrasting deep gold style crests from inside. Slight fragrance Iris have become such complex beings when it comes to patterns and application of color. Standards are pretty straight forward being a brilliant golden yellow. Falls are a bit more complex. There is a large and plush mahogany red spot in the center, but things get complicated in the band. There is a large wide band that circles the signal, but instead of it being one consistent color it starts outs as a light lavender and lemon blend at the haft and about half way down transitions to lemon and finally deep gold at the distil end. The standard color reflecting itself at the distil end of the fall draws the eye across the whole flower and creates a very pleasing presentation. Light musky fragrance. Medium pink standards rise above very light creamy white falls with a slight pink flush and deeper pink hafts. A wide and pronounced violet blue band frames the fall and brings the whole iris to life. Really good, tall, multi-budded show stems make one stop in their tracks. Sweet fragrance. Slate white standards have a blue flush in the center. Falls are a gorgeous slate lavender blue with a lighter wash area around the blueish white beard. There is also a slightly darker lavender rim on the falls. Undeniable was named for obvious reasons; there was never any doubt that it was going to be released. It has beautiful form on tall, well-branched and balanced stems, and is a very strong grower that blooms and blooms from early to late in the iris bloom season. Light fragrance. Standards are medium lavender with darker lavender dotting in the center. Falls are pristine white with a deep purple to near black haft. There is a purple dotted band, followed by a solid deep violet to near black band with a lighter pencil edge. It is stunning and bold, just like someone who would “waltz right in”. Light fragrance. Deep golden yellow standards rise above yellow ground falls overlaid with a deep mahogany red haft and striped edge. The yellow ground on the fall extends out between the mahogany to create a rayed effect. There is a large lavender area below the orange beard. Quite a busy and dramatic flower. Sdlg.
