Slight sweet fragrance. Standards have a cream base color with deep yellow at the base. There is a violet flush in the center that then fades and becomes lemon veins, before culminating in a narrow light lemon-yellow band. Falls are a rich and plush deep mahogany red violet with a wide lavender band and narrow buff edge. A tall showstopper in the garden that has been a favorite since its maiden bloom. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. This is one of the first broken color plicatas. Subsequent generations indicate it is an inheritable trait, so let the breeding begin. Nothing in the parentage indicates the possibility of broken color. About 1/3 of the seedlings from this cross were plicatas, about 1/3 were selfs, and about 1/3 were broken color plicatas. Well-branched stalks have 2 branches and a spur producing 7-9 blooms. Vigorous growth provides quick clumps. Intriguing to see each flower marked differently. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. This taller sibling of ‘Make Up Your Mind’ is a very handsome traditional plicata in a lovely cornflower blue shade. It adds one more branch and a complement of 9-10 buds on show stalks. It too is a strong clean grower. Standards are a near solid cornflower blue with a buff wire edge. Sweet fragrance. This vigorous and hardy yellow ground plicata comes from very different breeding. It produces consistent show stalks that are at home in the garden or on the show bench. Plicata markings are somewhat variable from one year to the next. Use it to breed for better plicata winter hardiness. Sldg. Standards are light yellow with medium lemon yellow centers. Falls have a very deep maroon central spot that becomes a wash as it moves toward the edge. There is then a light violet blushed area before becoming a clear light yellow band. A very clean and dramatic pattern and another step in the ‘pansy face’ pattern.

In the continuing quest for that perfectly clean pink amoena comes Love You More. White standards are flushed pink in the centers. Falls are a gorgeous shade of pink, with deeper texture veins. It is a really lovely color combination that is stunning in the fields. Classically formed flowers are held on nicely branched and budded stems. Really gorgeous.

LITTLE MISS POPULAR (T. Johnson ’25)
SDB Early-midseason 13” (33cm) Slight fragrance.
Brilliant orange standards are flushed purple in the center. Falls are orange with deeper orange hafts and violet veins that become a dotted wash just prior to the orange edge. The colors are brilliant neon on super wide petals, creating an intensity that is amazing.

SHEMOZZLE (T. Johnson ’25)
TB Early-midseason 36” (91.5cm) Sweet fragrance.
Lemon yellow standards rise above very complex patterned falls. There is a yellow flash around the beard, then a reddish band at the haft that becomes a blue violet wash. The pattern then transitions to a lavender band, and finally a lemon band. Quite a busy little thing, but also very showy. Gorgeous ruffled form and nice stems are the norm.

Sudden Outburst comes from the ‘pansy face’ pattern breeding program. Standards are icy blue white. Falls are a rich deep violet with reddish hafts and a wide lavender band. Very pretty and well received at the local iris show.

VERMILION CLIFFS (P. Black '25)
AB (OGB-) Midseason-late 23” (58.5cm) No fragrance.
Its name comes from the similarly colored Vermilion Cliffs of Arizona. Mid gold styles peek out from between light tan standards. Falls have light tan ground washed coppery tangerine over the lower half, and have mid coppery red sanded veins on the upper half. Light yellow beards end in small red-black signals.

PLAY WITH ZEBRAS (P. Black '25)
TB Midseason-late 34” (86.5cm) Pronounced musky fragrance.
Talk about a zebra of a different stripe. This is one of the few broken color plicatas, and one with sterling plant habits and superbly formed flowers. White standards have a wide dark purple plicata band and closely spaced dotting over the center. Wide and ruffled falls are white with dark purple broken color segments, streaks, dotting, and sanding. Show stalks have three branches and 7-8 buds. I’m working on zebras in other colors now. What a fun project this is!

COME FLY WITH ME (P. Black '25)
TB Early-midseason 34” (86.5cm) Pronounced sweet fragrance.
Standards are mid blue veined darker blue. Here is where it gets interesting to describe. Falls are the same as standards except a bit grayed, but with contrasting rich walnut brown hafts. Gilt gold rims widen to narrow light gray bands. Its uniqueness draws one back again and again for a closer look. It is a strong grower, with 2 branches plus spur and 6-7 buds.

GETTING SOME SUN (P. Black '25)

Moderately sized flowers and shorter stalks help keep this sunny creation upright when the weather turns cloudy and rainy. Mid-dark yellow standards are echoed in the color of the hafts, band and texture veins of the white falls. Big mid marigold beards demand you come closer. Two widely spaced branches carry 7 buds.
