LET’S TALK (P. Black '21)
SDB Early-Midseason 13” (33cm)
Definitely not the usual violet and white plicata. There is an interesting dialog between the redder dark plum standards and the white falls widely plicata banded mid violet blue with red plum hafts. Big golden beards end with a neat lilac shadow.

MOUSE THAT ROARED (P. Black '21)
SDB Midseason-Late 11” (28cm)
It may be small, but it has a big impact in a clump. It is another variation on a plicata theme reaching back to ‘Ghost Ship’. It is a luminata but not in the traditional TB style luminatas by having darker fall veins rather than lighter. The upper half of white standards are shaded mid slate purple with butter edges. Startling white styles peak out from between them. Falls have bright yellow throats blended to white then washed light to mid violet to edges. Chlorophyl lines streak alongside beards turning to mid violet and darkening to edges.

PORTLAND PINK (P. Black ‘15)
SDB Late-Very Late 15” (38cm)
It was tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Saying it is unique is a vast understatement. It is the best formed of all the pink SDBs. Color has great depth and richness. Its one flaw is some flowers have a 4th standard. It is a big advancement in my project to create SDBs that bloom into TB season. It begins bloom in early TB season. How cool to have a SDB for a TB timed show. The cross that created it, an IB X IB, shouldn’t have been fertile but it did have viable seed. Even more amazing, ‘Portland Pink’ is fertile. It can be picky about its partner but can have anywhere from a few to normal numbers of seed and they germinate. Shorty, the pod parent, is from a pink tetraploid MTB seedling X my SDB, ‘Juicy Tidbit’. The pollen parent is a multi-branched & budded IB from a small flowered TB, ‘Inspired’ sib X my SDB, ‘Love Spell’. Growth is strong and increase rapid. Although it is from 2 IBs, it has never exceeded SDB height. What about using it in hybridizing? Go on, have your way with it. It is fertile with SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. I haven’t tried MDBs. Expect wide variation in flower and plant size of seedlings.

PUSSYCAT EYES (P. Black ‘19)
AB Midseason-Late 28” (71cm)
‘Pussycat Eyes’ is an altogether amazing quarter bred arilbred. Easy growing arilbreds with such strong aril characteristics are rare and even more rare is having 2 branches and at least 7 buds. Palest lilac standards surround yellow styles. Wide, arched falls have big black signals giving way to a dark cherry area and then to mid red purple and finished with a 1/4” tan gold band. Grows easily in average garden conditions.

What a character this poor mixed up Scoundrel is. Be careful, you never know how he’s going to be on any given day. Light olive standards are irregularly splashed dark violet. Yellow styles are about the only stable part of Scoudrel. Centers of light olive falls are slate violet irregularly marked plum. Big, plush dark gold beards are flanked by gold hafts. It is amazing to have three prime selections from the same cross. This luminata plicata has old gold standards washed darker brass overall and interesting green midribs. Mid gold styles lead to bold yellow luminata type fall spots that have light tan plicata markings becoming mid cinnamon toward edges. The lower half of fall is dark mahogany with a gilt gold rim. The big burnt orange beards will make you go ‘Wow Gee Whiz’. Great from a distance or up close. Strong growth.
