Coming out of my lined pattern breeding, THUNDERING APPLAUSE pushes the pattern a step further. We are finally getting wide ruffled and even slightly laced form. Creamy white standards are infused peach pink. Falls have a light lemon base that is overlaid with violet lines radiating from the heart of the flower and becoming more of a wash near the edge. Then the whole pattern is framed by a nice lemon-yellow band. Tangerine beards help to compliment the pattern. Super strong growth on floriferous clumps.

Named after our little dog, Tula is a beauty that was labeled for introduction since its maiden bloom. Standards are an off white with light violet plicata dots and lemon flush throughout. Falls are interesting with white ground overlaid almost completely with deeper violet plicata dots. Adding to the interest are deep violet veins that extend from around the beard to petal edge. All of this is highlighted by very shocking medium lemon style arms that are very visible, creating a strong contrast. Three buds, good growth and bloom habits make this a garden favorite and a fun parent.

UNTAMED GLORY (T. Johnson ’21)

Untamed Glory is a novelty iris. It very consistently has six falls and no standards, but instead of going completely flat they hold in the shape of a magnolia bloom. It is very reminiscent in form of a very old cultivar by Opal Brown called Pink Magnolia. A clump of Untamed Glory will completely cover itself with these large ruffled salmon pink flowers with irregular white broken color. Definitely an iris for those who love the novelties.

Cream to flesh pink standards that are heavily infused antique to rose pink in centers. Falls are deeper flamingo to rose pink with tangerine beards. Nicely formed and ruffled flowers are carried on show stems with 11 buds early in the season. Coming out of a cross made with two Blyth seedlings. Very nice!

Sweet fragrance. Canary yellow standards. Falls are light lavender blue below the beard becoming lighter towards the edge. The hafts are touched yellow and there is a light yellow band that surrounds the fall. You Can Jive produces quality show stems with 10 or more buds, grows with strong vigor, and blooms profusely. In fact it puts on such a show that I simply have to stop to admire it each day when it is in flower. Uniqueness can be determined not only by color or pattern but garden performance and this one certainly does that.

Light sweet fragrance. Flesh pink Standards with deeper pink centers and a bit of lavender shot up the midrib. Falls are a rich deep royal purple with a lighter purple edge. Sweet fragrance. One of our favorite intros for this year and that is saying a lot with its competition and the fact that it is a plicata. The color on this is hard to convey in a picture as the presence it has in the garden. It is simply spectacular in clump with its extremely bright color and sharp pattern. Standards are icy white with a near solid overlay of blue lilac. The falls are white with a blue haft, center dart below beard, and band. Even the beard is tipped in blue. Gorgeous, wide, and ruffled form make it irresistible. Running In Circles has also been admired by garden visitors. Recommended! you won’t be sorry! Sdlg. SHIVERS (T. Johnson ’23) TB Midseason 37” (94cm) Sweet fragrance. Wow, just wow is what I say each time I see this one in flower. Nearest attempt yet to a black amoena that we have seen. Icy blue white standards have a gilt gold edge and the visible style crests are also etched in gold. Falls are about a dark a black purple as there is. Beards are a burnt orange. Sweet fragrance. Deep lemon-yellow standards with a lighter edge. Falls are a rust to burgundy with a white rayed pattern extending out from around the beard. The falls are then banded with a wide lemon border and then etched by a thin red line. This Is Crazy is breathtakingly beautiful in clump. Slight fragrance. This iris has fascinated me since its maiden bloom. The pattern is different especially for a horned variety. Standards and styles are a medium coral pink. Flaring falls are like a zebra. Is it medium orchid violet with pink veins or deep pink with medium orchid violet veins? The falls also have a defined narrow band of pink-orchid.
