A hard iris to describe but here goes. Burnt orange to salmon blended Standards are shot violet in the center. Falls have a cream and salmon ground overlaid with a deep black cherry plicata bar across the hafts and band around edge. Burnt orange to brown beards. Strong well branched stems carry up to 11 buds. A very showy garden favorite! We like!!

Snapshot may be short of stature but you won’t overlook the powerful presence of its bright colors in your garden. Blazing yellow-gold standards continue as large sunbursts etched onto centers of mahogany-red falls. Mahogany veins radiate over sunbursts. Zingy gold beards amplify the sunburst effect. Growth is strong and robust. Stalks have two branches and 7 buds.

WHEN DOVES CRY (T.Johnson ’18)

A lovely clean and ruffled bicolor iris. Standards are icy white with light lemon highlights especially shot up the midrib. Falls are a plush burgundy with nice wide and precise lavender bands and a darker wire rim. Nice orange beards contrast nicely with the plush burgundy falls. A favorite and used a lot in hybridizing.

QUIGLEY (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Slight fragrance. I found it quite difficult to capture the unique beauty of Quigley in a photograph. I am still not completely satisfied. The color is more vibrant than the photo shows. It is one of those that I kept coming back to admire and study its unique coloration. Really fun in full clump, sorry I missed getting a good clump shot, but there is so much happening at once in the spring and such little time. Brassy gold standards with a little white ground showing in the centers. Falls have a white ground below the beard then cinnamon dotting and a central belly stripe. A brassy gold band encircles the fall. Very different and unique.

Light sweet fragrance. Flesh pink Standards with deeper pink centers and a bit of lavender shot up the midrib. Falls are a rich deep royal purple with a lighter purple edge. Orange beards are tipped lavender. This is a striking bicolor in an uncommon color combination. Strong well branched show stems carry 9 buds. Gorgeous! Sdlg. TJ303XX: Future Ruler X Secret Status.

Sweet fragrance. Flesh pink standards have medium lavender shot up the midribs and light lemon touched petal edges. Falls are a very rich lavender violet with a lighter edge. Near red beards have a violet tip. Very wide expansive flowers held on well branched stems Great distinctiveness on this intriguing bicolor. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Standards are a bright gold with a bit of maroon shot up the midribs. Falls are a medium maroon with yellow influences giving it the appearance of a sort of brown with a lighter edge. A color combination not often seen and a good iris for those who love brown. Light sweet fragrance. Pink Standards and hafts over medium lavender falls. Huge blocky flowers with excellent form are carried on show stems. Check out the differing shots of it on the website. The color can be quite different with lighting, different days or even different years. Generally, the more overcast and cooler that it is the darker the color. REFINED ELEGANCE (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. The first thing that comes to mind about Refined Elegance is form! It was stunning in the fields this past spring. Lemon yellow standards are shot lilac up the midrib. Falls are a rosy lilac being deeper at the haft and lighter at the edge. A heavy wash of lemon on either side of the beard helps to accentuate the ruffles. This is a beautiful iris in a different sort of color pattern than we have seen. Sdlg. TK131WW: Head Of the Class sib.

SHIVERS (T. Johnson ’23) TB Midseason 37” (94cm) Sweet fragrance. Wow, just wow is what I say each time I see this one in flower. Nearest attempt yet to a black amoena that we have seen. Icy blue white standards have a gilt gold edge and the visible style crests are also etched in gold. Falls are about a dark a black purple as there is. Beards are a burnt orange. Pronounced sweet fragrance Oh yes, that big billowy ruffled form is something to shout about. Mid red violet standards have ruffled light buff bands and subtle gray-white veins shot outward from their centers. Styles are light buff. Mid dark red violet blended falls have muted fine gray-white lines overall, narrow gray-white bands and white luminata patch. Beards progress from mid marigold ending in white. Standards are a medium yellow with a darker edge. Falls are a very light yellow with deep lemon yellow hafts. A wide ruffled deep maroon band frames the pattern. It is hard to capture the true grandeur of Boxing Ring in a photo. The flowers are very large and widely formed with great ruffles. It creates a very dramatic look in the garden. Much admired by garden visitors, it is a gorgeous iris that will not be overlooked.

OH FAR OUT (T. Johnson ’25)

Oh Far Out is what I say each year when I approach this iris. The intensity of the gold is so bright, it is amazing!! Brilliant golden yellow flowers have a wide and precise maroon red band and lighter rim on the falls. An absolutely stunning iris in a clump!! Strong show stems are in abundance. Recommended for those who are looking for an iris to make a statement.

STARE INTO MY EYES (P. Black '25)
AB (OGB-) Late-very late 23” (58.5cm) Slight sweet fragrance.
Stare Into My Eyes makes a significant advancement in the buds and branching of quarter arilbred irises. It is a big favorite. Strong stalks have two well-spaced branches plus spur and 7-8 buds. It is vigorous and as easy to grow as other bearded irises. White standards have light yellow centers blended to wide white bands shot with light yellow veins. Falls have big purple signals irregularly blended into wide light amethyst bands. Because of its later bloom, you’ll be able to take it to a show.

Some iris have such a complex coloration that it is hard to describe. To make matters more difficult, the shade of purple in Cosmic can be different from day to day, and from year to year. We struggled to figure out which picture to use for the catalogue, and have included several shots on the website for you to see for yourself. No matter what the shade, Cosmic is a blooming fool, absolutely covering itself in bloom, and is intensely bright, with its very wide gold band in the standards, and yellow flash overlaying the white luminata patch on the falls. Lines, lines, and more lines! I have been working with this pattern for a number of years and have gotten some very interesting things. If I were to choose just one word to describe this, it would be floriferous! It completely covers itself in tall, well branched and budded stems, and blooms for a long time. It is not the first to start blooming, but about midway through the early season it starts, and goes and goes. The picture kind of speaks for itself. Here’s another in the limited realm of the strange broken color plicatas. Each flower is patterned differently. Typically marked standards have a light buttercream ground with a dark charcoal-purple wide rib, heavily plicata-sanded center, and wide band. White falls have light yellow variably-sized hafts, irregular broken color segments of wine to purple dotting and sanding, and a narrow dark wine plicata band. Sdlg.
