The extreme ruffles of Baltic Sea reminds us of the power of crashing, windswept waves as they curl toward the shore. Large, tightly formed medium marine blue flowers are breathtaking when seen singly or in clump. Beards are soft cream to blue-white. Strong growth produces stalks with 3 branches and about 9 buds. Heavy substance helps Baltic Sea maintain its lovely form even in the rain.

Standards have a white ground that is almost completely overlaid with lavender blue. Falls have a stark white ground with a deep inky blue purple plicata band. Tangerine beards are tipped violet. Garden performance is what comes to mind when I think of this iris. It is a very floriferous and strong grower that is quite stunning in full clump. Amazingly beautiful!!

Brilliant golden yellow Standards. Falls are oxblood red with a wide mustard gold band and then a red wire edge. Extremely bright, almost shocking color combination! Very early to bloom on good stems with 8 buds. The falls remind me more of the spot pattern found in SDBs. FUN!!

If you need a bold spalsh of color in your garden, ‘Painted Love’ is the iris for you. Mid gold standards are blushed red violet. Wide blue violet falls have Indian red bands and hafts and are paler around deep marigold beards. Nine buds on well branched stalks add to its appeal. Reminds us of an updated version of the old classic ‘Syncopation’.

Puerto Vallarta the iris kind of reminds me of the beautiful sunsets over the ocean on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, thus the name. Brilliant golden yellow standards. Falls have dark yellow hafts that blend to a lighter lemon wash and finally deepening to a mustard yellow edge. Salmon shadings are deeper at the haft becoming a blended wash inside the yellow edge. There is also a large white patch below the intensely saturated yellow/orange beards. A very consistent garden performer with show stems and 9 buds. An easy and strong grower that really adds a bright spot of color in the garden. Super!!

Some iris just remind me of food, perhaps it is just my insatiable appetite talking, but this one reminds me of some sort of yummy mango flavored dessert. Say the Word has very ruffled mango to peach blended standards and edge on white falls with a deep mango wash on the hafts and below the beard. A good grower and bloomer, Say the Word is a stunner; especially in full sun the color really shines. Very unique and won’t be confused with another. Gorgeous!!

Medium lavender standards are darker at the edge. Falls are a deep lavender purple with a very wide and ruffled medium lavender band. Yellow orange beards are tipped lavender. If you are into the dramatic this certainly fits the bill. Spectacular in clump with an abundance of large ruffled flowers on show stems. TRUTH OR DARE (T. Johnson ’18)

A total new pattern in TBs is emerging. We have loved this one from its maiden bloom. Garden nickname had been “pansy face” because it reminds us of a pattern you would find on a Pansy flower. Standards are lemon yellow deeper at the base. Falls are white with a faint yellow halo band near edge of petals. What really sets this flower off is the dramatic rusy to red central signal that surrounds the orange beard. Not the easiest of parents but from what we have bloomed from it so far it is well worth the effort. Nice stem with up to 8 buds.

Two things immediately come to mind when I think of this flower: the brilliant beard and the wonderful wide, round and ruffled form. It could be described as a rimmed broken color plicata. A very interesting mix of several patterns in one. I have used it heavily in breeding. Zig Zag is one of many iris to be introduced out of the fantastic parent Alaia.

HONOR ROLL (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Honor Roll is the fourth sister in this cross to be introduced and it has been used heavily in my hybridizing program. Palest cream standards are veined and infused light lemon and deep gold at the base. Falls are a very deep plush burgundy with a wide light lavender band that blends into a light yellow edge. Heavily ruffled parts of the petal backs show and add to the effect with multiple layers of color. Nice stems with good branching and bud count make it a winner. A very beautiful iris and a favorite for sure. Check out all the pictures of Honor Roll as the flower ages through the days the yellow pigments become more creamy white. Gorgeous either way, we love this iris and we think you will too.

Sweet fragrance. The first thing that comes to mind about Refined Elegance is form! It was stunning in the fields this past spring. Lemon yellow standards are shot lilac up the midrib. Falls are a rosy lilac being deeper at the haft and lighter at the edge. A heavy wash of lemon on either side of the beard helps to accentuate the ruffles. Sweet perfume. Old gold standards with a light yellow edge. Falls are a rich deep mauve with a gold band. Tall large and stately come to mind with this one. It is a very fast clumper and very floriferous, covering itself in bloom. A very good iris. Sdlg. TK3YY: Suave and Sophisticated sib.

Pronounced musky fragrance Exuberantly ruffled standards and falls remind one of the exaggerated ruffles of the circus clown’s collar. Dark charcoal red brown falls show a bit of light yellow plic ground centers. Bright light-mid yellow ground falls have narrow dark charcoal red brown plic bands. White chevrons around dark old gold beards have brown-black veins and sanding. Superbly branched stalks have 3 branches plus spur and 9-10 buds. Lightly fragrant. More coral than pink, this self reminds me of the coral jewelry you can obtain in Hawaii. The color always stops me in the garden because of its intensity. The coral-pink is a little creamy around the beards. Beards are coral, lightening to peach at the upturned tip. Flowers are ruffled with slightly crimped edges. Light sweet fragrance. The markings and color of this iris remind me of a fine Monet painting. Standards are bordered dark apricot diffusing to medium plum purple in the center. The dark apricot styles are tinted purple and are fringed. Falls have wide borders of plum purple that streaks into the medium apricot center. Extending from the dark tangerine beards are plum purple belly stripes. Great stalks with three branches support 9-13 buds. 5217A: Hot Wired sib.
