Big, round and buxom. She was ‘Born this Way’. Frothy, exuberantly ruffled fuchsia rose falls are widely banded near white with an interesting veined transition between central color and banding. Strong well-branched stalks carry these beauties in regal fashion. Easy increaser. Unfortunately the cross tag was lost.

BRIGHT AND SHINING STAR (P. Black ‘20)

This one shines brightly from across the garden with its pristine white flowers with falls narrowly stitched mid purple. Ample rufflling gives it that special flair. A strong spicy fragrance increases its star rating. Stalks have 2 branches and 7 buds.

Elegant it is. Prominent midribs of heavily ruffled white standards are flushed pink and blended outward. Hafts and edges of chalky white falls are touched pink. Strong show stalks insure it a place on the “Queen’s Court”. Fast increase and free bloom insure there’ll be plenty of them.

Dusty rose standards with deeper violet flush in center. Falls are slate blue purple with dusty rose hafts and tangerine beards. Well branched and budded stems assure a Queen of Show every time. Mystery Lady is a heavy bloomer covering itself in flowers. Strong growth with rapid increase. An iris that will draw you in for a closer inspection every time. Nice!!

PORTLAND PINK (P. Black ‘15)

It was tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Saying it is unique is a vast understatement. It is the best formed of all the pink SDBs. Color has great depth and richness. Its one flaw is some flowers have a 4th standard. It is a big advancement in my project to create SDBs that bloom into TB season. It begins bloom in early TB season. How cool to have a SDB for a TB timed show. The cross that created it, an IB X IB, shouldn’t have been fertile but it did have viable seed. Even more amazing, ‘Portland Pink’ is fertile. It can be picky about its partner but can have anywhere from a few to normal numbers of seed and they germinate. Shorty, the pod parent, is from a pink tetraploid MTB seedling X my SDB, ‘Juicy Tidbit’. The pollen parent is a multi-branched & budded IB from a small flowered TB, ‘Inspired’ sib X my SDB, ‘Love Spell’. Growth is strong and increase rapid. Although it is from 2 IBs, it has never exceeded SDB height. What about using it in hybridizing? Go on, have your way with it. It is fertile with SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. I haven’t tried MDBs. Expect wide variation in flower and plant size of seedlings.

Yes, it will always be a puzzle as to what the parentage is since the tag was lost. ‘Puzzled’ is such a unique creation that most people won’t care. Standards are buttery peach with orangish texture veins. Wide and ruffled falls are an interesting irregular maroon wash over light lavender ground blending lighter toward edges. Beards are dark orange. Show stalks have ample buds. Growth is strong and increase abundant.

She has it all, grace, charm, looks, and poise - she's a SUPER MODEL. This SUPER MODEL excels where other heavily laced violet types have failed. When she finishes blooming there is still plenty of increase left. Many visitors to the AIS convention this past year remarked on that trait. Perfectly formed medium lilac flowers are edged in heavy crinkled lace. With all this lace, SUPER MODEL still opens easily. Strong show stalks normally open two well placed flowers at once. Be the first one on your block with your own SUPER MODEL. Hopefully this will be the key to unlock the overbloom problem in this color range.

Sweet fragrance. Dark burgundy-maroon standards are edged with a wide gold band. Falls are a deep beetroot red to near black with a narrow gold edge. The central white luminata patch has gold touched hafts on both sides. Heavily ruffled flowers are a delight to behold. Here Comes Trouble is a strong grower with fast increase and a prolific bloomer. She has been very popular with garden visitors. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Light lavender violet standards are banded in cream with faint gold veining. Falls are a rich deep red violet with a light lavender edge. Beards are a nice tangerine. Space race is a super strong grower and a fast increaser creating full clumps very quickly. A color pattern that shows from clear across the field. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. Standards are pink with a flesh pink band and a gold edge. Falls are a rich plum violet with tangerine beards. This is a late variety. It is in full flower when pretty much everything else has finished. A very strong grower and increaser and floriferous, covering itself in bloom. Sdlg. TK1ZZ: Love You So sib.

Pronounced musky fragrance I think without a doubt this is the finest of the black and white plicata IBs. Centers of iridescent purple-black standards reveal just a bit of white plic ground. White falls have wide black plic bands with purple interior markings. Show stalks have 2 branches plus spur and 7-8 buds. Vigorous growth and increase. Stunning clumps. It is fertile. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. A broken color plicata, coming from ‘Me And My Shadow’. No two flowers alike, as the degree of stippling and dotting in ratio to broken color changes from bloom to bloom. Taller show stalks have 3 branches and sometimes a spur with 9-11 buds. Plants are strong with vigorous growth and increase. An exciting and fun pattern. Sdlg. BLUEPRINT FOR SPRING (P. Black '25)

What makes this light blue bitone with falls veined darker mid-blue special? I think it is the best attempt so far to put a pink beard on a blue iris. It has been a challenge for many hybridizers. Its other special feature is the clumps filled with bloom stalks creating an overpowering display of color in the garden. To say it is floriferous is an understatement, and yet, there is plenty of increase left.
