As BBs go, ‘Black Label’ is perfection in addition to having a wonderfully diverse parentage. Purple black bitone flowers have white hafts with black veins that continue down the falls. There have been many Iris named in these colours, however here is one that puts on such a spectacular show, it calls for your attention. Standards are light violet, harmonizing with the richer colored red burgundy falls and beards of violet brown. Show stems both for flower quality and branching.

A new era of brightly colored, wider and more ruffled tetraploid MTBs is emerging from mixed chromosome breeding. This parentage includes SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. The SDB pollen parent, ‘April Fanfare’, can have 2 branches and 6 buds which helps make it an excellent tet MTB parent. This bright bicolor has unique peach styles and the pattern is pumila spot plicata. ‘FLIRTIN’ SKIRTS’ will make a memorable clump. Can be used in breeding in all median classes and TBs. I’m using it to hopefully produce pumila spot plics in TBs.

Here’s another in the expanding line of late blooming, multiple budded and branched SDBs. Classically formed flowers have smoky light violet to buff pink blended standards and light pink to violet styles. Mid violet blend falls have cream hafts with dark plum veins that extend downward. Dark orange beards make it even more outrageous. Three well-spaced branches have 7-9 buds.

The disguise is a brilliant success. Who’d expect anything evil about this lavish blending of dark to mid purples adorned with an angelic near white beard. Super wide falls with lightly ruffled edges allow an unobstructed display of its alluring color. Minimal plicata marking of the standards at the midrib hint at its plicata heritage. Three well-spaced branches carry 9-10 buds.
