These tears add up to a stunning plicata. Classically formed ruffled blooms have palest pink standards heavily plic washed, sanded, and veined dark lilac. Wide pink buff fall centers are dotted mid lilac becoming darker and more heavily applied toward edges. White hafts are lined and sanded dark lilac on each side of burnt orange beards. Vigorous growth produces stalks with 3 branches plus spur and 9-10 buds. A pronounced sweet fragrance is a plus.

TRUTH OR DARE (T. Johnson ’18)

A total new pattern in TBs is emerging. We have loved this one from its maiden bloom. Garden nickname had been “pansy face” because it reminds us of a pattern you would find on a Pansy flower. Standards are lemon yellow deeper at the base. Falls are white with a faint yellow halo band near edge of petals. What really sets this flower off is the dramatic rusy to red central signal that surrounds the orange beard. Not the easiest of parents but from what we have bloomed from it so far it is well worth the effort. Nice stem with up to 8 buds.

COURAGEOUS ONE (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Light sweet fragrance. Canary yellow standards lightening towards the edge. Falls are a very light yellow base washed slightly darker to the edge. A large rust red signal radiates out from around the beards and extends half way down the fall. Nicely proportioned BB and very showy and unique.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Slight fragrance. Rich butter yellow standards. Falls have a light creamy yellow base that is a near solid patch in center becoming a lined and rayed pattern that is overlaid mid to deep violet, then the petals are etched light yellow with a purple wire rim. Nicely ruffled and pleated flowers are extremely bright and showy. Quite a unique application of color and pattern. Lovely show stems and good bud count assure it to be a contender on the show bench. A favorite since its maiden bloom.

DON’T YOU DARE (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Pure bright yellow standards. Falls have deep yellow hafts on either side of the beard. The bright yellow on the hafts becomes lighter towards the petal edge. There is a strong dark violet inkblot below the beard that extends to near the petal edge. Ruffled and slightly flared flowers for the late season. A very interesting and striking pattern.

Slight musky fragrance Flawless ruffled flowers are dark charcoal wine blended to slightly lighter fall borders. Richly saturated beards are purple overlaid dark sienna. So nice!

YOU’RE EARLY (P. Black '22)

Pronounced sweet fragrance. This pretty little plicata continues with the contrasting-colored styles of ‘It’s a Small World’. Upright light buff standards showcase yummy mid peach styles. Buff falls are lightly washed pink and trimmed with elongated brown to plum plicata hafts. Big fully saturated screaming orange beards clamor for attention.

FIELDS OF GOLD (T. Johnson ’23)

Light sweet fragrance. Standards are a deep lemon yellow with the edges being a light lemon. Falls are an interesting blend of lemon and maroon in the center giving somewhat of a brown effect. The petal edge of the fall is encircled in a wide cream and lemon blended band. The color of the fall can be quite different depending on the weather and the year. This last spring we were cool and wet the whole time and the flowers opened up a rich brown in the fall and then transitioned to the lighter color. THIS IS CRAZY (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Deep lemon-yellow standards with a lighter edge. Falls are a rust to burgundy with a white rayed pattern extending out from around the beard. The falls are then banded with a wide lemon border and then etched by a thin red line. This Is Crazy is breathtakingly beautiful in clump. UNDER PRESSURE (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Under Pressure is another iris that was labeled as an intro from maiden bloom. It never ceases to perform and has good stems and buds as well. Bright yellow standards. The falls are a bit complicated. There is a yellow sunburst in the center that is bordered with a diffused wash of red violet. Then the violet transitions to lavender and finally a very light yellow rim with a violet wire edge. Sdlg. TK170C: Dare To Be Different and This Is Crazy sib.

SUNSHINE BOUQUET (Paul Black 23)

Strong sweet fragrance There is nothing that shines in a garden like yellow. This clean as a whistle bright clear yellow glaciata has even more carrying power because of the white patch below yellow beards. If you’re keen to hybridize luminatas, pair this one up with a quality luminata and you should get plenty. Taller and better vigor than many glaciatas. Three branches provide 8 buds. Sdlg. Sweet fragrance. This vigorous and hardy yellow ground plicata comes from very different breeding. It produces consistent show stalks that are at home in the garden or on the show bench. Plicata markings are somewhat variable from one year to the next. Use it to breed for better plicata winter hardiness. Sldg. Standards are light lavender, with muted gold in the center and edge. Falls are white with deep violet lines extending from the beard then becoming a wash as the pattern blends into a violet band. Complexity has very wide and billowing form in a unique color.

FALCON HEART (T. Johnson ’25)

Standards are light yellow with medium lemon yellow centers. Falls have a very deep maroon central spot that becomes a wash as it moves toward the edge. There is then a light violet blushed area before becoming a clear light yellow band. A very clean and dramatic pattern and another step in the ‘pansy face’ pattern.
