Medium grape standards and edge on deep violet falls. Flowers are large, full and beautifully ruffled. A very nice addition to the purple iris palette. The strange rust to almost brown beards add a bit of mystery. Very classy indeed!!

Sweet fragrance. Lavender pink standards are deeper lavender in the center. Falls are a rich deep lavender blue with a heavier blue wash in the center. Beards are a burnt orange. Nice classically formed ruffled and lightly laced flowers are borne in abundance on well branched stems. Definitely for the lover of rich bicolored and laced iris.

HONOR ROLL (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Honor Roll is the fourth sister in this cross to be introduced and it has been used heavily in my hybridizing program. Palest cream standards are veined and infused light lemon and deep gold at the base. Falls are a very deep plush burgundy with a wide light lavender band that blends into a light yellow edge. Heavily ruffled parts of the petal backs show and add to the effect with multiple layers of color. Nice stems with good branching and bud count make it a winner. A very beautiful iris and a favorite for sure. Check out all the pictures of Honor Roll as the flower ages through the days the yellow pigments become more creamy white. Gorgeous either way, we love this iris and we think you will too.

LUCKY ROLL (Paul Black '22)

Slight sweet fragrance. Its colors and markings are variable. Whether it makes it a broken color, I don’t know. Slate mauve and violet standards are flecked amber as are dark old gold styles. Mid caramel falls have red-brown flecks and mid black cherry signals veined red-black.

No fragrance. Standards are mid red-violet with random garnet patches particularly on outer third. Mid garnet washed over terracotta bases have large dark red-brown signals surrounding dark brown beards. Makes bright and cheery clumps.

DISTANT SHORES (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Icy white standards are infused light violet and pink at the midrib. Falls are lavender-blue violet with a lighter lavender edge. What brings life to Distant Shores is the pink in the base of the standards. It draws your eye in for a closer inspection of the frosted blue violet beard. EVENING STROLL (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. White ground standards are heavily overlaid deep blue purple with a deep plum to near black band. Falls are white with an inner band of deep blue purple dots and a more solid outer band of deep plum. The beard is an unusual blend with the hairs being blue purple at the base then white and finally yellow at the tips creating quite a complex treat. Evening Stroll has finally broken the link between shorter stature and lower bud count in the deep purple-black plicata lines. Seven to nine buds on tall well branched stalks are the norm. Sdlg. STAY IN LINE (T. Johnson ’23)

Light fragrance. White standards have a heavy peach pink washed center. Falls are Light orange with violet lines radiating out from below the beard. There is a wide orange band at the petal edge and within the band in the center is a large concentration of violet dots. Finally, we are starting to combine the dots and speckles pattern in a more controlled fashion instead of just random. It is also exciting to get some different colors going in the lined pattern. White standards have a touch of lemon at the base. Falls are maroon to red with a white rim, and a light yellow area around the beard. The flowers are heavily ruffled. A TB that is a little on the shorter side, for the front of the border, and certainly one for those who love ruffles.

NEVER ENDING STORY (T. Johnson ’25)

Very light lemon to cream standards have darker lemon centers. Falls are a deep red violet with a small yellow area around the beard. There is a bit of bluish violet blending below the beard, and a wide heavily ruffled and blended yellow band. Never Ending Story has gorgeous classical form with heavy ruffles on nice stems. A really lovely iris!

Lemon yellow standards rise above very complex patterned falls. There is a yellow flash around the beard, then a reddish band at the haft that becomes a blue violet wash. The pattern then transitions to a lavender band, and finally a lemon band. Quite a busy little thing, but also very showy. Gorgeous ruffled form and nice stems are the norm.

The setting summer sun casts a warm glow as you stroll about. The light clear pink standards of this glaciata blend to wide, light clear yellow bands. Ruffled white falls blend to light yellow margins. Mid tangerine beards rise from peachy orange hafts. Summer Stroll creates a very satisfying clump filled with show stalks. Stalks have 3 branches plus spur and 9-10 buds. So very pretty. Its later bloom assures it will escape the late frosts/freezes that so many other glaciatas are prone to damage by. Sdlg. Yes, it is consistent, and it’s been a favorite with visitors!! Standards are full lemon yellow, and styles are yellow. Falls are lemon yellow, with a cream center, and an old gold border. Yellow hafts are brushed brown-purple. Orange-yellow beards extend into huge pom-pom appendages of yellow, brushed brown-purple. Nice stems carry 7-10 buds. EC ’24 and ’25.
