Sweet fragrance. Luminatas have always been a favorite of mine and I am super excited about Spine Tingler. The form is divine-very wide and ruffled flowers on show stems with high bud count. A clump of it approaches perfection. Inky purple standards with nice precise gold edging. Darker violet falls with nice creamy-white lumi patch that is touched gold with a short white dart below the orange beard. The very wide ruffled falls are edged in gold. Recommended for the lovers of this pattern.

GONE VIRAL (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Standards are marine blue violet with a white band. Falls are a deep rich blue violet with a white edge and striping on the sides. There is a large white luminata patch around the beard and a short white dart below the beard. The hafts are touched orange which helps to draw the eye into the flower. Sweet fragrance. Standards are the darkest red violet with a very light rose edge. Falls are an intense shade of black mulberry with a thin light margin of light rose. There is just a touch of orange on either side of the white luminata patch. On The Cover is a very dark luminata but to the red tones of purple black where as many other dark luminatas currently on the market are to the blue tones of black. Pronounced sweet fragrance What a medley of colors and pattern creating a ‘Feast for the Eyes’. This easy growing luminata has vibrant rosy lilac standards blended to light buttery tan ruffled bands. Pronounced sweet fragrance Oh yes, that big billowy ruffled form is something to shout about. Mid red violet standards have ruffled light buff bands and subtle gray-white veins shot outward from their centers. Styles are light buff. Mid dark red violet blended falls have muted fine gray-white lines overall, narrow gray-white bands and white luminata patch. Beards progress from mid marigold ending in white. Slight musky fragrance This later blooming pink ground plicata avoids the winter damage that plagued so many earlier ones of this type. Ruffled standards are mid pink blending to mid apricot edges. Mid coral styles echo these warmer colors. Light pink falls have white luminata type patches lined mid plum. Narrow ruffled red-plum plicata bands encircle the expansive falls. BALLROOM GOWN (Thomas Johnson ’26)

It is difficult to find the words to describe this one; the picture kind of says it all. Incredible form and with heavy substance, this stately luminata is characterized with a very wide rim on the standards. Intensely ruffled falls have a huge showy central luminata patch. At 39 inches, it is very tall for this pattern, which has tended to be on the shorter side. Show stems that can carry up to three branches, and spurs even on the branches, provide lots of buds for an extended bloom season. CAN JUST IMAGINE (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Lavender blue standards; falls are lavender blue with a deeper violet blue brindled wash. Beards are burnt orange with lavender tips. Can Just Imagine is very tall and stately, with beautiful show stems. It is a ‘fancy’, which in hybridizing talk means it is about one generation away from being a luminata. A unique and striking feature is its beautiful lavender spathes and stems. It is very hard to photograph but is very noticeable in the garden. We have used this one quite a lot in hybridizing. COSMIC (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Some iris have such a complex coloration that it is hard to describe. To make matters more difficult, the shade of purple in Cosmic can be different from day to day, and from year to year. We struggled to figure out which picture to use for the catalogue, and have included several shots on the website for you to see for yourself. No matter what the shade, Cosmic is a blooming fool, absolutely covering itself in bloom, and is intensely bright, with its very wide gold band in the standards, and yellow flash overlaying the white luminata patch on the falls. IGUAZU FALLS (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Named for the truly breathtaking waterfalls that sit on the border of Argentina with Brazil and Paraguay. Medium royal purple standards are wrapped in a wide near white band. Falls are medium royal purple, with a very large light pink to white luminata patch and wide lavender band.
