What a crazy mixed up potpourri of color and pattern. Insaniac carries on with another variation of ‘Wild Angel’ type patterning. Flowers are fuller and more ruffled. The addition of gold edges on standards and styles makes a lovely accent. A clump of Insaniac will be a sure showstopper in your garden.

PORTLAND PINK (P. Black ‘15)

It was tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Saying it is unique is a vast understatement. It is the best formed of all the pink SDBs. Color has great depth and richness. Its one flaw is some flowers have a 4th standard. It is a big advancement in my project to create SDBs that bloom into TB season. It begins bloom in early TB season. How cool to have a SDB for a TB timed show. The cross that created it, an IB X IB, shouldn’t have been fertile but it did have viable seed. Even more amazing, ‘Portland Pink’ is fertile. It can be picky about its partner but can have anywhere from a few to normal numbers of seed and they germinate. Shorty, the pod parent, is from a pink tetraploid MTB seedling X my SDB, ‘Juicy Tidbit’. The pollen parent is a multi-branched & budded IB from a small flowered TB, ‘Inspired’ sib X my SDB, ‘Love Spell’. Growth is strong and increase rapid. Although it is from 2 IBs, it has never exceeded SDB height. What about using it in hybridizing? Go on, have your way with it. It is fertile with SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs. I haven’t tried MDBs. Expect wide variation in flower and plant size of seedlings.

Sweet fragrance. Honor Roll is the fourth sister in this cross to be introduced and it has been used heavily in my hybridizing program. Palest cream standards are veined and infused light lemon and deep gold at the base. Falls are a very deep plush burgundy with a wide light lavender band that blends into a light yellow edge. Heavily ruffled parts of the petal backs show and add to the effect with multiple layers of color. Nice stems with good branching and bud count make it a winner. A very beautiful iris and a favorite for sure. Check out all the pictures of Honor Roll as the flower ages through the days the yellow pigments become more creamy white. Gorgeous either way, we love this iris and we think you will too.

BOYSENBERRY DRIZZLE (Paul Black 23)

Pronounced sweet fragrance Take a dip of luscious vanilla ice cream and drizzle boysenberry syrup over it and you have this scrumptious confection. Dark red purple standards have white centers heavily plic marked the same. Styles are plum brown. Fancy plic marked cream falls are covered overall with boysenberry sanded veins becoming darker and more concentrated toward edges. Later bloom helps prevent late frost damage. Superb show stalks have 4 branches plus spur and 2 branch spurs producing 11-14 buds. Makes unforgettable clumps filled with bloom. Gives lovely seedlings. Sdlg. Z74E, Expanding Universe sib

FOND OF YOU (T. Johnson ’23)

Sweet fragrance. Standards are medium orange with pink blendings. Falls are Pink with a light rosy violet blend at petal edges. The light violet in the falls is more pronounced in cooler weather. CORAL JEWEL (L. Miller ’23)

Lightly fragrant. More coral than pink, this self reminds me of the coral jewelry you can obtain in Hawaii. The color always stops me in the garden because of its intensity. The coral-pink is a little creamy around the beards. Beards are coral, lightening to peach at the upturned tip. Flowers are ruffled with slightly crimped edges. PRETTY SIGHT (Black ’24)

Sweet fragrance. This taller sibling of ‘Make Up Your Mind’ is a very handsome traditional plicata in a lovely cornflower blue shade. It adds one more branch and a complement of 9-10 buds on show stalks. It too is a strong clean grower. Standards are a near solid cornflower blue with a buff wire edge. In the continuing quest for that perfectly clean pink amoena comes Love You More. White standards are flushed pink in the centers. Falls are a gorgeous shade of pink, with deeper texture veins. It is a really lovely color combination that is stunning in the fields. Classically formed flowers are held on nicely branched and budded stems. Really gorgeous.
