'‘Famous’ is a minimal plicata that is wonderfully unique. Dark mahogany standards are lightly laced and rimmed mid tan. Cream styles have mid mahogany ridge and crest centers. Dark yellow throat and hafts of falls are plicata lined and sanded black mahogany. The lower 2/3rds of fall is dark mahogany black. Big bright beards are two-toned marigold to yellow. So far it has been a difficult parent.

FLYING MONKEY (P. Black '21)

What a sight this monkey is with a wonderful luminata pattern. Standards are cream heavily washed mid khaki as are the styles. Falls have huge neon marigold beards surrounded by clear mid yellow throat and hafts giving way to white surrounding their tips. The falls lower half is washed/sanded mid brown and narrowly banded tan gold. What a sight! Very showy clumps. Excellent parent.

It is amazing to have three prime selections from the same cross. This luminata plicata has old gold standards washed darker brass overall and interesting green midribs. Mid gold styles lead to bold yellow luminata type fall spots that have light tan plicata markings becoming mid cinnamon toward edges. The lower half of fall is dark mahogany with a gilt gold rim. The big burnt orange beards will make you go ‘Wow Gee Whiz’. Great from a distance or up close. Strong growth.

GIRLS WANNA HAVE FUN (Paul Black '22)

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Combinations of the plicata pattern with other patterns have created a seemingly never ending universe of new and unique patterns and colors. One of those is a butterfly type design where a luminata patch would be. There will be many variations of these to come. This one has mid pink standards with subtle darker rose lines and outer edge. Velvety dark purple-black falls have white darted chevon haft patches overlaid with near black lines sandwiched between purple sanded veins in a modified butterfly pattern. Coral beards enhance its uniqueness. Clumps are gloriously filled with an abundance of stalks having 3 branches and 8-9 buds.

BLACKBERRY BANDIT (Paul Black 23)

Pronounced sweet fragrance ‘Blackberry Bandit’ is sure to seduce you and never break your heart. Clean, husky growing plants produce show stalks with 3 branches and spur plus 8-9 buds. Standards and styles are mid-dark red violet. Extended white hafts with dark red violet veins form a butterfly wing pattern coalescing into the solid red-black lower half with irregular white dotted edges. Sweet fragrance. Standards are an off white with medium violet veins and shades of lemon blending throughout the petal. The lemon is more concentrated in the center and the edge. Falls are a rich lavender violet deepening at the hafts and lightening at the petal edge. Put all this together with fantastic wide bubble ruffles and you have a very showy creation indeed. Sdlg. No fragrance This cross again illustrates the unusual fertility between tetraploid and diploid MTBs that nobody seems to be able to adequately explain. The seedlings from my cross W195 proved to be sterile in crosses I made. A smart bee gave me one seed that is ‘Interject’. It is fertile with diploids and is being introduced to add more genes to the diploid MTB mix. Standards and styles are mid gold. Upper half of falls are white veined mid old gold and lower half is mid gold washed Dijon and rimmed in gold. Stalks have 2 branches and spur with 7-8 buds. Sdlg. Slight spicy fragrance. Taking the I. variegata veined fall pattern to an extreme. Makes a startling clump. Parentage involves mostly tets., but Amethyst Starburst looks diploid. Sdlg. BUTTERFLY EYE (P. Black '25)
TB Early-midseason 33” (84cm) Pronounced spicy fragrance.
Butterfly Eye is an example of the recently emerging cascade patterns where the fall centers have various contrasting colors, from veins to solid cascades. Light slate violet standards blend to a wide pale violet-white band. Wide pale violet-blue falls help emphasize the cascade patterning. Large dark indigo blue hafts transition to widely spaced dark indigo veins and mottling. Fat beards are an interesting tobacco brown. Strong growth produces show stalks.

COME FLY WITH ME (P. Black '25)
TB Early-midseason 34” (86.5cm) Pronounced sweet fragrance.
Standards are mid blue veined darker blue. Here is where it gets interesting to describe. Falls are the same as standards except a bit grayed, but with contrasting rich walnut brown hafts. Gilt gold rims widen to narrow light gray bands. Its uniqueness draws one back again and again for a closer look. It is a strong grower, with 2 branches plus spur and 6-7 buds.
