Classic aril traits and relatively easy culture make this a prime selection for those wanting to give their first arilbred a try. Near white standards are finally netted mid lilac. Dusky mid rose falls have huge dark red brown aril signals and characteristic sparse diffuse beards. Usually one branch and 3 buds.

It has been hard for me to capture the beauty of this one in a photo. Very light yellow standards are heavily flushed deep golden yellow at the base and in the center transitioning to veining at the edge. Falls are a rich reddish brown with a lemon yellow and white blended band. A clump of this blooming in the full sun is spectacular. An excellent garden iris that is well branched, budded and floriferous.

WRAP HER UP (T. Johnson ’21)

Apricot to salmon pink standards with a rosy lavender flush up the midrib. Falls are a rich magenta rose that is very clean with a nice ruffled edge and red orange beards. Wrap Her Up is a very clean bicolor and we think much prettier than the photo depicts. With very pretty show stems, Wrap Her Up makes a very elegant show near the end of the season.

Reaching for the sky on strong stalks with incredible branches that have spurs on the lower branches. Standards and styles are pink. Falls are medium purple. Extending from the tangerine beards are large flounces that are orchid pink on top and medium purple on the reverse side. 4 branches with 11 to 12 buds.

Sweet fragrance. White standards with slight lavender blush at base. Medium lavender blue falls with lighter wash in the center becoming deeper at the edge. Rather large bushy beards tangerine leaning towards red. Nicely formed, heavily ruffled, and lightly laced flowers are held on well branched and budded stems. Beautiful in the garden and a favorite since its maiden bloom.

Sweet fragrance. Cranberry red self with a blue blaze that becomes a wash below the tangerine beard. Really a nice rich and vibrant color that draws you in. Nice wide overlapping falls with light ruffles.

GARDEN PRINCE (Thomas Johnson ’22)

Sweet fragrance. Stately and bold probably best describes Garden Prince. Classic form on this lovely lavender-blue-purple. The hafts and style crests are touched chocolate. The fall is also bordered in a deeper violet edge. Orange beards tipped blue complete the look. Very nicely branched stems and with good bud count. An intriguing iris and one that always drew me for a closer look when walking through the seedlings.

Slight spicy fragrance. Here is another stop along the way to redder TBs. ‘Morning Show’ has shown in median breeding the ability produce quite red offspring and so I incorporated it into the TBs. ‘Last of the Wine’ is a mid and dark garnet bi-tone that leans well into red. Nicely branched and budded stalks.

Light fragrance. Not just another plicata! Standards are mostly solid rich maroon with slight undertones of apricot in the center. The lacey edges of the very dark apricot styles are trimmed in maroon. Flaring falls have apricot-peach ground bordered by a solid maroon edge that turns to dots as it extends from the burnt dark orange beards. 9 to 10 buds on well branched stalks. Light sweet fragrance. The markings and color of this iris remind me of a fine Monet painting. Standards are bordered dark apricot diffusing to medium plum purple in the center. The dark apricot styles are tinted purple and are fringed. Falls have wide borders of plum purple that streaks into the medium apricot center. Slight musky fragrance This later blooming pink ground plicata avoids the winter damage that plagued so many earlier ones of this type. Ruffled standards are mid pink blending to mid apricot edges. Mid coral styles echo these warmer colors. Light pink falls have white luminata type patches lined mid plum. Narrow ruffled red-plum plicata bands encircle the expansive falls.
