This iris is a very complex mix of colors and is hard to describe. I think it is best to just look at the picture. The name Coat of Many Colors seems to fit it well. Nicely branched stems and good bud count combined with lovely ruffled form make it a winner for sure. On top of all of that it is a hybridizers dream, giving some of the most awesome patterns in the seedling patch this past season. Coat of Many Colors is the product of two Barry Blyth seedlings. Recommended!!

A garden favorite from its maiden bloom and has remained so. It is a great show-off in the garden with its bold contrasting colors including bright red beards. You won’t need a name tag to know what it is. From crosses I made while in Australia.

He’s tall, dark and handsome and draws the eye of anyone walking by. Only the finest clothes will do for this Sharp Dressed Man. Standards are iridescent mid purple. Elegantly ruffled purple black falls have a velvety texture and slightly lighter rim. Only someone so confident could get by with such an outrageous orange tie. Show stalks with 3-4 branches and 10-12 buds help insure a superior garden performance. Robust, healthy growth. Colors are exceptionally clear.

Snapshot may be short of stature but you won’t overlook the powerful presence of its bright colors in your garden. Blazing yellow-gold standards continue as large sunbursts etched onto centers of mahogany-red falls. Mahogany veins radiate over sunbursts. Zingy gold beards amplify the sunburst effect. Growth is strong and robust. Stalks have two branches and 7 buds.

A difficult blending of colors to describe. Standards are eggshell white with opal pink blushed centers. Falls are Lavender with an eggshell rim. What really sets this off is the beard. The beard is violet with orange hair tips becoming more solid dark blue to violet at the end. Gorgeous form on nice show stems compete the effect. We love this iris!!

ZIP ZING ZOWIE (P. Black '21)

Your head spins round with the whirlwind of colors of this broken color type. White standards are randomly splashed light lilac and tan. Fall centers are white blended outward to mid yellow and narrowly edged white and then randomly streaked, splashed, veined and mottled varying shades of vibrant red plum. You won’t miss seeing these wildly colorful flowers. Three well-spaced branches produce 7-8 buds.

Sweet fragrance. Brilliant gold standards with a few random burgundy spots near the edge. Falls are light yellow with a lighter cream area below the beard. There is a pattern of darker gold at the hafts and on the edge that is in turn overlaid with burgundy stripes and dots. Short burgundy lines randomly jut out below the neon tangerine beard. Neon colors!!

Very light fragrance. Deep golden yellow standards with light butter edges. Falls are a very complex mix of colors. Gold hafts on either side of the beard and then maroon and finally lavender before forming a gold band. Below the beard is a blended mix of medium and dark lavender. Very colorful in the garden and a very floriferous iris. Great stems and ample buds. Flowers are semi-flared. Very showy.

Pronounced sweet fragrance ‘Child’ is the beginning of a new color pattern of pink and yellow bi-colors. Mid pink standards sit atop light yellow falls washed pale pink then decorated with half tangerine and half soft lavender beards. Very pretty.

Slight sweet fragrance. Its colors and markings are variable. Whether it makes it a broken color, I don’t know. Slate mauve and violet standards are flecked amber as are dark old gold styles. Mid caramel falls have red-brown flecks and mid black cherry signals veined red-black.

Pronounced sweet fragrance If I could have only one of my plicatas to breed with, it would be this one. Its genetic diversity, including several instances of ‘Dolce’ plus SDBs, IBs, tet MTBs, BBs and TBs, has given rise to unique colors and patterns in addition to solid growth. White ground standards are washed pale mustard becoming darker toward edges then embellished with darker mustard fine veining overall and white edges. Yellow styles are held within strongly held standards. Expansive white ground falls are widely plicata banded dark olive gold with more olive random dotting and line down centers, over centers and haft. Unique olive gold beards complete this unusual creature. Three branches have 7-8 buds.

Pronounced sweet fragrance. Combinations of the plicata pattern with other patterns have created a seemingly never ending universe of new and unique patterns and colors. One of those is a butterfly type design where a luminata patch would be. There will be many variations of these to come. This one has mid pink standards with subtle darker rose lines and outer edge. Velvety dark purple-black falls have white darted chevon haft patches overlaid with near black lines sandwiched between purple sanded veins in a modified butterfly pattern. Coral beards enhance its uniqueness. Clumps are gloriously filled with an abundance of stalks having 3 branches and 8-9 buds.

Pronounced sweet fragrance Oh YES, I really like this one. Be sure to take in the lovely, nuanced colors. Tight classically formed flowers have waxen substance and sheen. Lightly laced red brown standards blend to wide dark mulberry bands, a very interesting color transition. Narrow crinkle laced black cherry falls are touched with white dotting. The white chevron around the multi-layered beard is heavily mottled mid black cherry. Three layered beards are white to dark purple and tipped old gold. Strong, disease resistant foliage. Musky fragrance. Yet again another introduction from the fabulous parent Alaia. These colors are in neon. Standards and styles have pink centers with light orange edges. Sweet fragrance. Wow! This is a favorite that I look forward to blooming each year. Such a strange but pretty and intriguing combination of colors. WITCH WAY (T. Johnson ’23)

Slight sweet fragrance. Reddish brown standards blended with some yellow at the edges. Falls are lemon yellow with a deep maroon red haft and wide band. Gorgeous form, with nice stalks and heavy bloom. There are several sisters from this cross that will be introduced all in different colors. Sdlg. TM187E: Superstitious sib.

AMETHYST ANGEL (T. Johnson ’23)
TB Late 38” (96.5cm) Sweet fragrance.
Light lavender standards with pink centers. Falls are a rich purple reminiscent of the purple seen more often in siberian iris. The beards are large and a unique blending of colors that comes off as kind of a frosted root beer. The flowers are very wide, large and ruffled. Tall well branched stems add to the look.
