In the continuing quest for that perfectly clean pink amoena comes Love You More. White standards are flushed pink in the centers. Falls are a gorgeous shade of pink, with deeper texture veins. It is a really lovely color combination that is stunning in the fields. Classically formed flowers are held on nicely branched and budded stems. Really gorgeous.

Brilliant orange standards are flushed purple in the center. Falls are orange with deeper orange hafts and violet veins that become a dotted wash just prior to the orange edge. The colors are brilliant neon on super wide petals, creating an intensity that is amazing.

Lemon yellow standards rise above very complex patterned falls. There is a yellow flash around the beard, then a reddish band at the haft that becomes a blue violet wash. The pattern then transitions to a lavender band, and finally a lemon band. Quite a busy little thing, but also very showy. Gorgeous ruffled form and nice stems are the norm.

VERMILION CLIFFS (P. Black '25)
AB (OGB-) Midseason-late 23” (58.5cm) No fragrance.
Its name comes from the similarly colored Vermilion Cliffs of Arizona. Mid gold styles peek out from between light tan standards. Falls have light tan ground washed coppery tangerine over the lower half, and have mid coppery red sanded veins on the upper half. Light yellow beards end in small red-black signals.

PLAY WITH ZEBRAS (P. Black '25)
TB Midseason-late 34” (86.5cm) Pronounced musky fragrance.
Talk about a zebra of a different stripe. This is one of the few broken color plicatas, and one with sterling plant habits and superbly formed flowers. White standards have a wide dark purple plicata band and closely spaced dotting over the center. Wide and ruffled falls are white with dark purple broken color segments, streaks, dotting, and sanding. Show stalks have three branches and 7-8 buds. I’m working on zebras in other colors now. What a fun project this is!

Standards are mid blue veined darker blue. Here is where it gets interesting to describe. Falls are the same as standards except a bit grayed, but with contrasting rich walnut brown hafts. Gilt gold rims widen to narrow light gray bands. Its uniqueness draws one back again and again for a closer look. It is a strong grower, with 2 branches plus spur and 6-7 buds.

Moderately sized flowers and shorter stalks help keep this sunny creation upright when the weather turns cloudy and rainy. The name was inspired by our young iris enthusiast friend Dylan Just. If you have ever seen his lively inspiring iris videos, you will certainly recognize the phrase “are you kidding me” as his signature punchline. It is a very fitting name, and very descriptive of the way I myself felt the year it first bloomed. It comes from the line of unique iris that have been coined the ‘pansy face’ pattern. I love everything about this iris, from its lavender standards with maroon base, to its wide and ruffled falls with deep maroon central overlay. What can we say about this one? Contrast certainly comes to mind! Deep blue purple standards sit atop cinnamon brown falls. Tall stems with lightly ruffled flowers have carrying power out the kazoo! Holy cow, does this one make a statement. It is the iris that garden visitors most often tell me about; it seems to imprint! Certainly unique, and won’t be mistaken for anything else! COSMETOLOGIST (Thomas Johnson ’26)

This is a plicata pattern that has a lot going on. Standards have a very light lavender ground, with lavender dotting showing in the center, and then becoming a medium lemon band. Falls are a light lavender white ground, with a deep burgundy haft bar, and a faint lilac lavender dotted edge. Even the beard is complex, with a white base and hair tips that change from burgundy to orange as it moves towards the heart of the flower. Cosmetologist comes from a line of plicatas that are not from traditional plicata breeding; they descend from recessive plicatas that appeared in bicolor breeding lines. DISCO PARTY (Thomas Johnson ’26)

This beauty certainly reminds me of a wild disco party. Clean medium lemon-yellow standards are the perfect match for the wildly patterned falls. The large canary yellow sunburst center becomes a lavender to maroon wash that is then encircled with a lemon band. Done Deal is one of those iris that has it all: great form, branching, bud count, and vigor. Standards are a pearl white with pink and light salmon blended centers. Falls are a rich lavender with a deep red violet signal around the beard, which becomes a deeper lavender wash throughout the mid-section. PUZZLE PIECE (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Iris have become such complex beings when it comes to patterns and application of color. The standards are pretty straight forward, being a brilliant golden yellow, but the falls are a bit more complex. There is a large and plush mahogany red signal spot in the center, but things get complicated in the band. There is a large wide band that circles the signal, but instead of it being one consistent color, it starts out as a light lavender and lemon blend at the haft, about half way down transitions to lemon, and finally shows deep gold at the distal end. The standard color reflecting itself at the distal end of the fall draws the eye across the whole flower and creates a very pleasing presentation. RIVER VEIN (Thomas Johnson ’26)

Standards are very light lavender white, with golden violet veining that becomes more prominent in the gold band. Falls are very deep velvety purple, with a strong white ground displaying the sunburst veining pattern emanating out from around and below the gold orange beard. River Vein is an early variety that puts on a fantastic show at the beginning of the bloom season. Show stems, vigorous plants, and plenty of buds are the norm. Sdlg. Brilliant golden yellow standards rise above falls with a golden yellow center and a reddish violet overlay wash below the beard. The overlay becomes a deep reddish violet band, with a lighter rosy pink narrow edge. Lots going on in this flower for sure. Patterned iris like this one are so fun, in that the longer you look at them the more complex you realize the color scheme is.
