There have been many Iris named in these colours, however here is one that puts on such a spectacular show, it calls for your attention. Standards are light violet, harmonizing with the richer colored red burgundy falls and beards of violet brown. Show stems both for flower quality and branching.

DREAM ABOUT YOU (T. Johnson ’18)

Standards mustard to lemon yellow. Falls are a rich medium mauve to violet with a lighter brownish fall edge. Hafts are touched yellow to brown on either side of russet beards. An iris that is a bit difficult to photograph. Super form and ruffles on well branched and budded show stalks. A favorite and tagged for introduction from its maiden bloom. Recommended!!

FEEL THE POWER (T. Johnson ’20)

A hard iris to describe but here goes. Burnt orange to salmon blended Standards are shot violet in the center. Falls have a cream and salmon ground overlaid with a deep black cherry plicata bar across the hafts and band around edge. Burnt orange to brown beards. Strong well branched stems carry up to 11 buds. A very showy garden favorite! We like!!

IGNITE THE LIGHT (T. Johnson ’21)

It has been hard for me to capture the beauty of this one in a photo. Very light yellow standards are heavily flushed deep golden yellow at the base and in the center transitioning to veining at the edge. Falls are a rich reddish brown with a lemon yellow and white blended band. A clump of this blooming in the full sun is spectacular. An excellent garden iris that is well branched, budded and floriferous.

ROLLING IN THE DEEP (T. Johnson ’21)

Medium grape standards and edge on deep violet falls. Flowers are large, full and beautifully ruffled. A very nice addition to the purple iris palette. The strange rust to almost brown beards add a bit of mystery. Very classy indeed!!

UNTAMED GLORY (T. Johnson ’21)

Untamed Glory is a novelty iris. It very consistently has six falls and no standards, but instead of going completely flat they hold in the shape of a magnolia bloom. It is very reminiscent in form of a very old cultivar by Opal Brown called Pink Magnolia. A clump of Untamed Glory will completely cover itself with these large ruffled salmon pink flowers with irregular white broken color. Definitely an iris for those who love the novelties.

WHY BE NORMAL (T.Johnson ‘14)

No reason that I can think of to be normal when you can be outrageous. ‘Why Be Normal’ is a true flat iris, one having no standards and six falls with beards rather than one that merely has weak standards. Mid caramel falls have mid brown hafts and center stripes extending from mid mustard gold beards. Nest of white styles with gold crests is very cool. Nicely branched stalks have no trouble supporting these large flowers.

GILDED CHOCOLATE (Lynda Miller ’22)

If you like chocolate, this iris looks good enough to eat. Standards are rich dark red-chocolate brown with thin gilded gold edge. The red-chocolate brown falls have the same gilded gold edge plus thin gold veins radiating around beards of dark old gold. 9-12 buds. Exhibition certificate. 2019

Sweet fragrance. Standards are a bright gold with a bit of maroon shot up the midribs. Falls are a medium maroon with yellow influences giving it the appearance of a sort of brown with a lighter edge. A color combination not often seen and a good iris for those who love brown. Grateful Gathering is blessed with great buds, stems and strong growth. Sdlg. TM123A: Know It All X Bronze Heart.

THIS IS ME (T. Johnson’23)

Sweet fragrance. Deep plum standards and band on blue lavender falls. There is also a brown rayed patch on either side of the beard. Speaking of the beard, it is humongous!! The flowers are large and ruffled and the beard just draws you in. A very fun and beautiful iris. Sdlg. TI155D: Sweet Talker sib.

DARK EYED LASS (P. Black '25)

Here it is, the one many of you have been asking about since I first posted its picture on FB. I’m also in love with it. It is one of those irises where everything works together to make a stunning creation. Light yellow standard centers blend to wide stark white bands. Irregularly edged big brown-black fall spots transition to wide white bands, including a white dart up their distal center. A nest of white darts encircles white beards. OH MY!

RAZZLE DAZZLE ME (P. Black '25)

Can one possibly get more color on an iris? Probably, but this one makes a good run at it. Mid gold standards and styles top wide falls having mid red-purple centers with light grape finely sanded veins. Warm white hafts on each side of beards are heavily sanded and lined dark brown blended to dark black-brown edges. Moderate brassy khaki bands decorate the edges. Its pod parent Hotsy Totsy is an interesting parent for me. Two branches plus spur carry 7 buds.

JUST FOR JACKIE (P. Black '25)

Jackie is one of my best friends. She has always been a big help by leaving pink post-it notes on seedlings she thinks I should keep. We’ve had many good laughs together. She also insists on helping me plant my iris seeds each fall. Of course I wouldn’t hurt her feelings by saying no. She makes it all fun. She likes brown irises, so for her here is a white and dark red-brown plicata. Note the pronounced lines in the falls. Strong stalks have three branches and 8-9 buds. This is one of many exceptional seedlings coming from Crocodile Smile.

TYRANNOSIRIS REX (P. Black '25)
TB Midseason-late 33” (84cm) Slight sweet fragrance.
Well, maybe it isn’t quite as large as Tyrannosaurus Rex, but it is big and exuberantly ruffled. The standards have a small grayed light-yellow center that blends to light pewter, then to a wide light grayed brown band. Expansive falls are mid grayed yellow with mahogany hafts blended lighter to their edge. Mid old gold beards end in a short, wide, slate violet stripe. Unique it is! Excellent plant habits help create memorable clumps filled with show stalks.

What can we say about this one? Contrast certainly comes to mind! Deep blue purple standards sit atop cinnamon brown falls. Tall stems with lightly ruffled flowers have carrying power out the kazoo! Holy cow, does this one make a statement. It is the iris that garden visitors most often tell me about; it seems to imprint! Certainly unique, and won’t be mistaken for anything else! Stems and branching are good. The flowers are not as wide and ruffled as I usually like, but are certainly adequate. Sdlg. TN13A: Mood Ring X unknown seedling

Standards are lavender with a blended pink and orange center that extends out to the edge as veining. Falls are rich blue lavender with a deep inky purple diffused signal. Beards are a stunning mixture of orange and purple, giving the appearance of brown. A very wildly patterned iris that is an easy grower, with buds and branching galore. Sdlg. This iris is for the lovers of brown. Now if we could just make the standards a clean white, we could take it to the next level. At any rate, it is truly stunning as is. Standards are creamy white, with a heavy dose of deep lemon infused up through the center. Falls are a rich brown, with a lighter amber yellow edge.
