The color of All is Bright is so clean and clear that it looks like a glaciata but the parentage indicates it shouldn’t be and it isn’t. The genetic expression of seedlings from it doesn’t seem to follow any known rules. Used with blacks, it almost completely masks the anthocyanin. It does breed the brightest yellows and oranges. Falls of bright, dark yellow flowers look like a little orange juice was poured over them and have narrow gold rims. As if it weren’t bright enough, add neon orange beards. See what wonders you can create with it.

Carol Lankow’s ‘Jeweler’s Art’ has been a very productive variety for hybridizers to use to create very richly colored seedlings. Career is one of those. Standards are dark fuchsia purple covered by darker navy texture veins. Velvety black cherry falls are accentuated by lavender beards ending in short blue violet darts. Hybridizing with ‘Jeweler’s Art’ and its offspring has given some of the reddest seedlings yet seen.

Finally, a well-formed green to turquoise SDB with tangerine beards is getting closer. Color hasn’t been the biggest problem. The problem has been form and buds. Creamy yellow styles are surrounded by mid lime yellow standards. Darker lime yellow falls have greenish texture veins, white bands and short greenish white rays around orange to white beards. Makes a bright clump.

TB Midseason-Very Late 36” (91cm) It’s the Dog Days of summer. The bright sun warms the brown earth as it passes by. Caramel standards are solidly washed rich mid brown. Hafts of strongly flared medium butter yellow falls are red plum transitioning to narrow russet plicata bands then narrowly banded caramel tan. Russet plicata line bisects the falls. Healthy, vigorous growth and strong stalks with one and sometimes two branches make Flecks and Specks a very desirable arilbred. Mid purple standards are infused waxy red brown up midribs. Frontline takes the reverse blue amoena pattern and adds an exciting new dimension. Instead of solid blue standards, they blend from dark violet blue to icy white with centers heavily veined dark violet blue. They are a pleasing and different contrast to very wide and ruffled near white falls. Subdued tangerine to white beards don’t draw the eye away from the dramatic standards’ pattern. Strong show stalks have 3 branches plus spur and about seven buds. Growth is strong and healthy.

He may be shy but not those screaming neon orange beards. Standards are light smoky mauve. Smoky peach styles are an interesting divergence. Beards are given more emphasis from small white patches below them.

Falls are mid peachy terra-cotta with paler centers lightly brushed orchid. Lots of ruffles, lace and fat red orange beards complete the picture. There were also whites with strong orange beards.

Water of Life is the result of breeding for a black and white amoena plicata. It seems there is a way yet to go.
